Prime Cuts (incomplete Chrysalis sampler, bundled with The A&M Bootleg album)
Please note this is a dual lot comprising elements from two rare promotional sets, neither of which is perfectly preserved: read the detailed notes that follow.
The eight-page Chrysalis prospectus was signed by Gary Brooker, in my presence at his dwelling on 17 September 2021, for the present eBay auction to fans explicitly in mind.
Robin Trower kindly signed both the generic ‘in full flight’ card sleeve and the A side of his album, ‘Twice Removed from Yesterday’; this happened in early autumn 2021 and he kindly posted the album to me to be reinstated in the Prime Cuts box set.
Also present in the box, Procol Harum’s ‘Grand Hotel’ album in generic ‘full flight’ sleeve, and the Prime Cuts sampler (see pictures below). This presents cuts from Tir na Nog, Procol Harum, Robin Trower, Ten Years After, Leo Sayer, Steeleye Span, Mylon LeFevre & Alvin Lee, Jethro Tull, Bedlam (feat. Procol’s Dave Ball) and Chick Churchill.
Also present is the eight-page prospectus of Chrysalis artists, Trower and Procol on opposite pages of one spread as shewn. There’s a Procol press release, a single-sheet 12-inch square print of the Grand Hotel cover (suitable for framing), a Grand Hotel track list and tour date promo sheet, and an excellent LP-sized portrait of the classic 1970s' line-up, Keith Reid included.
Missing from the boxed set are the albums ‘Passion Play’ (Jethro Tull), ‘Strong in the Sun’ (Tir na Nog), ‘Parcel of Rogues’ (Steeleye Span), and ‘The Colorado Kid’ (Laurie Styvers)
There’s a yellow sticky handwritten note from Gary as shown, hinting at the contents of the box.
The Chrysalis box is scuffed, but its vinyl is in good shape, seemingly unplayed.
To compensate for the missing Chrysalis albums, we're including in the box ‘The A&M Bootleg’ from Gary Brooker's shelves but not signed by him, nor anyone else. 'Not for Sale', it was issued to radio stations only, for their libraries, in a manila carboard gatefold sleeve. It comprises four LP sides of classic period stuff – all issued originally on 45 rpm singles – including (Disc 1) Joe Cocker, Leon Russell (2); Procol Harum, Tyrannosaurus Rex; (3) the Move, Larry Marks, Lee Michaels; and (4) Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, Dillard and Clark, and the Burrito Brothers.
The A&M tracks are in good condition, except that the Leon Russell offerings are damaged and will probably not play properly.
Half the proceeds of this sale will go direct to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity … so please bid generously, and good luck!
