At the age of 15 Randy Meisner was a founding member of the DYNAMICS. The other members of the group were Larry Soto, Richard Rohnke and John Ankony. The DYNAMICS played their first concert in October 1961 and they played regularly in 1962. Even though the various group members were still in their teens they were able to play in front of ever increasing crowds.

Paul Asmus replaced Richard Rohnke in late 1962. The group's name had become DRIVIN' DYNAMICS by this time. The group released their first EP in 1962. This local release had only 500 copies pressed.

In 1963 the drummer leaves again. Instead of starting auditions for a new drummer, the DRIVIN' DYNAMICS hire Larry Soto's younger brother, Bobby Soto. Randy Meisner sings most of the lead vocals and the group gains an ever increasing popularity.

When the British invasion started in early 1964, the band tried to adapt the English look. The DRIVIN' DYNAMICS even became a six-piece outfit by this time. They also included rhythm'n'blues material in their sets as well as popular songs from the charts. In 1965, The Drivin' Dynamics released a 45 on Sully Records with Randy singing lead on "So Fine". The single sold well regionally and in the southeast US but did not chart nationally.

In 1965 the DRIVIN' DYNAMICS were able to play in front of over 2.500 people. When they entered a contest for local groups, they ended up second behind the SOUL SURVIVORS. The contest was the last concert for the bass player of the SOUL SURVIVORS. When the members of that group heard Randy Meisner's singing and bass playing, they asked him to join their group. Randy Meisner accepted the offer.

The SOUL SURVIVORS headed for California, where they hoped to get a record deal. In Los Angeles they found out that there already was a group with the same name. Therefore they decided to change their own name. Together they played a few concerts in 1966 as The NORTH SERRANO BLUES BAND.

As the group had addepted the name NORTH SERRANO BLUES BAND just to have a name for the concerts, which they were booked for, they kept searching for a real name. In respect to their own situation in LOS ANGELES they started to call themselves the POOR.

They only played a few concerts, but hardly earned enough money to live. John Day and Gene Chalk couldn't stand the situation any longer and so they decided to leave. They went back to Denver. The replacement for both was Randy Naylor, a guitarist and song writer who also played keyboards. Naylor had previously played together with George Grantham in a group called POLICE. The new line up of POOR was able to record and release some singles, which unfortunately were not successful.

At the end of 1966 everything look good. The POOR were invited to open some concerts for the BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD. But even this chance did not help to become successful. The group struggles on for most of 1967. In late 1967 Randy Naylor decides to leave the POOR. As the other members wanted to continue, they looked for a replacement. Finally they found Veeder van Dorn, who had played with the MOONRAKERS. The new line-up records another single for Decca, but again it fails to enter the charts.

Due to the lack of success the POOR disbanded in late 1968. Randy Meisner started to do a lot of session work. When the BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD disbanded in 1968 Richie Furay and Jim Messina were looking for some musicians to form a new band. At first they hired Rusty Young, who already had helped to record one song for the final album of the BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD. Rusty Young recommended George Grantham as the drummer for the group. They both had played together in the group BOENZEE CRYQUE. Jim Messina did not want to play the bass in the new group so George Grantham proposed to hire Randy Meisner. He knew Randy Meisner, since another member of Grantham's pre BOENZEE CRYQUE group, the POLICE, Randy Naylor, had joined Randy Meisner in the POOR in 1966. Now the new group was complete. It took quite some time to find an appropriate name. Proposals like ERECTOR SET or FLINTLOCK PEPPER BOX were discussed. Another name that was rejected was BUTTER MILK. In the end they came up with the name of a comic character: POGO.

After the first concerts of the quintet they were forced by the owners of the rights to the comic name to change the name. This time they did not want to discuss all the proposals again and therefore they decided just to change the "G" in their name to a "C". Now that this problem had been solved, they got a recording deal. They started to record their debut album. However, due to differences between Randy Meisner and Jim Messina over studio techniques and album sound, Randy Meisner left Poco just prior to the release of their first album "Pickin' Up The Pieces", although his bass and vocals are heard on the album.

It didn't take Randy Meisner long to find a new job. Ricky Nelson, who had seen a concert of POCO at the Troubadour, was planning a comeback. He wanted to have a backing band that was able to create music similar to the style of POCO. When he talked about this with a friend, this man told him that Randy Meisner was free again. Shortly thereafter Rick Nelson asked Randy Meisner to help him form a country rock group. Now Randy Meisner remembered his former colleagues from the POOR. He called Allen Kemp and Patrick Shanahan and they both joined the new group. Veeder van Dorn had reunited with his old friends from the MOONRAKERS and formed a new group, SUGARLOAF.
Similar to POCO the new group of Rick Nelson should also have a pedal steel guitar player. In the first line up this instrument was played by Sneaky Pete Kleinow. The group adopted the name STONE CANYON BAND.

When Kleinow went home for holiday and got the offer to join Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons in the FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS, so he left Rick Nelson's band. The STONE CANYON BAND continued without him, but they wanted to have a pedal steel guitar in their line-up.

For a few gigs Buddy Emmons was playing with them, but he had too many session comitments, so he could not join permanently.

Finally they got Tom Brumley to complete the band. One of their concerts in December 1969 at the Troubadour was taped and later on released as the critically acclaimed "Rick Nelson - In Concert".

Early 1970 Rick Nelson and the STONE CANYON BAND toured Europe. After the tour Randy Meisner decided to leave the group. He was disappointed by the bad conditions while touring. Randy Meisner wanted to concentrate on session work to have a regular income.

Randy Meisner soon recognized that he needed a band so he started searching for some musicians. Stephen A. Love was the first to come. Both musicians rehearsed as GOLDRUSH, but they couldn't complete their line-up.

During this time Randy Meisner got a phone call from Rick Nelson, who wanted to replace Meisner's successor Tim Cetera again with Randy Meisner. In the end Randy Meisner agreed and returned to the STONE CANYON BAND. Together they record the album "Rudy The Fifth", which was released in 1971. When the group played at an oldies festival they performed old songs as well as the material from the new album. The audience didn't like the new songs, they only wanted to hear the old rock'n'roll hits. Randy Meisner did not want to have such an experience again and so he leaves the group again.

After leaving the STONE CANYON BAND Randy Meisner started to do more session work, including recordings for Linda Ronstadt. At this time the LINDA RONSTADT BAND was made up by Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Richard Bowden and Mike Bowden. When Mike Bowden was ill, Randy Meisner played for the LINDA RONSTADT BAND.

During some of these concerts Bernie Leadon also joined the group. Henley, Frey, Leadon and Meisner harmonized well and so they left the LINDA RONSTADT BAND to form their own group, which they called the EAGLES.
