SUPERTRAMP – Same ORIG A&M LP / AMLS 981 (UK, Stereo, 1970)

Happy to present this incredibly rare UK 1st press of the debut offering from Supertramp, released some years before they hit big and virtually impossible to find on the 1st ‘tan/trumpet’ A&M label.  This sold in VERY low numbers on issue and compared to the later 70s repress, these label variants are seldom seen.

The single format, fully laminated sleeve was manufactured in the UK by MacNeill Press Ltd and has survived very well indeed with little to fault.  There’s just one ‘thumb’ crease to the front, 2 or 3 small creases to the back and some small and light edge creasing near the spine.  The rest of the laminate is nice and shiny with just a thin line of lift on the left edge and faint ring evidence.  Slight edge rubs and only the merest of corner tip rubs.  Other than this it shows no splits, tears, writing, stickers or scrapes.  The spine is fully intact – all text visible, little crushing.  A well above average 1970 sleeve which grades a TRUE EX- (Excellent Minus).

The original tan 1970 labels are in a lovely condition with no writing, dirt or stickers and only very minimal light spindle evidence close in around the centre hole.

The medium to heavy weight vinyl is in great shape except for a small but prominent scuff line across track 4 of the 1st side.  This mark is SURFACE ONLY and DOES NOT SOUND.  On the other side there is an even smaller but quite visible scuff towards the end of the 1st track.  Again no effect on the audio here.  Visually the rest of the disc looks excellent with only some very light scuffs and near invisible hairlines.  Take away the 2 visible scuff marks and this would grade somewhere around EX+ but I suppose these 2 ISOLATED marks reduce it to somewhere around a real VG+ (Very Good Plus).  IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and I’m happy to report that the playgrade is an overall EX with little to spoil your audio enjoyment.  There’s some ultra light dust static between tracks and in the extremely quiet parts, but I mean light!  There’s a dozen or so very light ticks on S2/T2 and a few more later on, on this side.  But that’s about it!  Everything else sounds brilliant!  No crackle, snap, pops, distortion or loss of clarity/lack of definition! This sounds very much like early Genesis in parts or maybe Procol Harum and the delicate songwriting skill is evident throughout.  A very ‘progressive’ LP and a long way from their later, more commercial output.

Reputedly this only sold in the hundreds in its original UK press but here is one of them – and with great sleeve and great playback.  Don’t miss this very rare opportunity.

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades.  After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN?  What is NM+? Or EX---?   These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay.  I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade.  Excellent, by dictionary definition means ‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
