·       STEVE YOUNG with GENE CLARK, GRAM PARSONS, CHRIS HILLMAN (OF THE BYRDS), JAMES BURTON and HAL BLAINE – ROCK, SALT AND NAILS -  ORIGINAL 1969 A&M RECORDS STEREO LP SP-4177

·       ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

·       *** WHITE LABEL PROMO ***

·       *** IN ADDITION, THE PROMOTIONAL STICKER ON THE COVER CLEARLY IDENTIFIES THE ITEM AS PROMOTIONAL ***

·       RARE PROMO-ONLY CSG MASTERING WITH DIFFERENT MIXES

·       HOW IS THIS PROMO-ONLY MASTERING DIFFERENT FROM THE REGULAR, STOCK, COMMERCIALLY RELEASED VERSION OF THIS ALBUM? HERE’S HOW: THIS PRESSING WAS MADE FROM THE PROMO-ONLY STAMPERS WHICH UTILIZED THE SO-CALLED “CSG PROCESS” (SEE THE GOLD LABEL ON THE COVER) AND WERE NEVER INTENDED FOR THE REGULAR, COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION OF THIS TITLE. FOR THOSE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ‘CSG’ PROCESS, THIS WAS A SHORT-LIVED NOVELTY PRODUCTION METHOD WHICH ALLOWED SOME LABELS (NOTABLY A&M) TO CUT DOWN ON THEIR PRODUCTION COSTS BY CEASING THE PRODUCTION OF THE CUSTOM (PROMO-ONLY) MONO PRESSINGS INTENDED FOR RADIO STATIONS ONLY. THE ‘CSG’ PROMO PRESSINGS ALLOWED THE RADIO STATIONS TO SWITCH FROM AM-UNFRIENDLY STEREO TO AM-FRIENDLY MONO WITH THE SIMPLE FLICK OF THE STEREO-TO-MONO CONVERTER SWITCH. IN ORDER TO ENABLE MONO (AM) BROADCAST, THE BOTTOM PART OF THE FREQUENCY RANGE (RHYTHM SECTION) HAD TO BE BOOSTED IN ORDER TO ENHANCE THE RADIO TRANSMISSION OVER AM WAVES; IN SHORT, CSG PRESSINGS HAD SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCED LOW END OF THE FREQUENCY RANGE (BASS AND DRUMS).  WHILE IT IS DEBATABLE WHETHER THESE CSG PROMOS ARE BETTER OR WORSE THAN COMMERCIAL MIXES (THE PREFERENCES ARE INDIVIDUAL; I PERSONALLY LIKE CSG MIX A LOT), IT IS THE FACT THAT CSG MIXES ARE CLEARLY DIFFERENT FROM THE REGULAR, COMMERCIALLY RELEASED VERSIONS.  THE ONLY WAY – SHORT OF PLAYING THE RECORD – THAT YOU CAN IDENTIFY THE CSG PRESSING IS VISUALLY: THE CSG-PRESSED COPIES HAD “CSG”- PREFIX IN THE MATRIX STAMP, AND A VERY THICK, DENSE, MATTED GROOVES WITH A DISTINCT “FISHBONE” TEXTURE. REGULAR, COMMERCIAL PRESSINGS WERE MORE EVEN AND “FLAT” IN TEXTURE, AND HAD A MUCH MORE GLOSSY, REFLECTIVE SURFACE.

Steve Young occupies a very special place in this seller's Pantheon of Idols: an artist who, like Sam Cooke, Sviatoslav Richter,  Aretha Franklin,  Django Reinhardt, Jimi Hendrix or Elvis Presley had (and still has) it all: graceful, almost spiritual charisma and aura, incredibly powerful and soaring, expressive voice; emotional punch, phenomenal songwriting skills, and, above all, unfathomable amount of SOUL and  genuine ability to express it.  If you must own one Country-Rock album, start right here, and STOP right here: you don't need anything else: THIS IS IT.  As far as this seller is concerned,  this is Alpha and Omega of what the genre has to offer.

We should add that Steve Young's debut album is ridiculously rare. This is only the seventh or eighth copy we have seen in about 32 years. 'Nuff said!

***

Steve Young was born and raised in the south, having lived in Georgia, Alabama and Texas throughout his childhood. By the 60s he had absorbed the musical heritage of his surroundings, performing music that blended country, folk, blues and gospel influences. He spent time as part of New York's Greenwich Village folk scene before moving to California in 1964. He was briefly with a band called Stone Country, before he decided to pursue a solo career. He was signed to A&M Records, and his debut album came out in 1969.Rock, Salt & Nails was turned out to be a brilliant record, rootsy and soulful, and is often considered an early classic of the country-rock and outlaw country genres. A lot of the songs were the covers, including the title track by Utah Phillips, Hank Williams’ “My Sweet Love Ain’t Around”, Roosevelt Jamison's "That's How Strong My Love Is", Johnny Horton's "I'm A One-Woman Man" and John Lee Hooker’s “Hoboin’”, but among the originals was “Seven Bridges Road”, which he would later re-record for his second album of the same name. It’s his best known song, and has been covered by loads of artists, including Joan Baez, Ian Matthews and The Eagles. Young played acoustic rhythm guitar, and among the assorted musicians backing him on the album was guitarist James Burton, bassist Chris Ethridge, fiddler Richard Greene, drummer Hal Blaine… It even had brief appearances from Gene Clark on harmonica and Gram Parsons on organ. But it's his stunning voice that stole the show from start to finish. Sadly it didn't get much recognition and had to remain an underground cult favorite, a fate that would shadow all his albums throughout his career.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 30:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(f)              Important disclosure: VISUALLY, THE RECORD IS STRONG VERY GOOD++. HOWEVER, WE CAUTION THAT a record has a slight warp – a deviance of about 1 degree from its horizontal axis on one 90-degree section. This has ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT ON PLAYING (the disc does NOT skip or "stick"), and is only a minor visual distraction.

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the spine

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
