Steam Heat (steamheat) - Austin Funk. Fable Records (F201), 1975. Highly sought after, soul/funk record from the heart of Tejas! Steam Heat was a one-of-a-kind band, a funky fusion of jazz, rock, and blues. Two charismatic frontmen traded vocals: the lean, bearded Bruce Spelman and the brawny, bespectacled Phil Ritcherson, who doubled as a horn player. Early members also included Kenney Dale Johnson, guitarist Mike Barnes, and keyboardist Neil Pederson. Their repertoire mixed Little Feat and Gil Scott-Heron with the occasional original composition. Steam Heat played songs by Al Green, James Brown, opening for acts ranging from Gil Scott-Heron to Roy Buchanan. The Fable record label was home to bands like Starcrost, 47X Its Own Weight, Beto y los Fairlanes, Jazzmanian Devil, and a variety of other non-country, non-blues bands. In 1975, Steam Heat released their first album for the label, "Austin Funk", which enjoyed much local success. By 1977, the band had changed its name to Extreme Heat and Johnson moved on - Austin Chronicle. 9 songs total, including: KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE MERCHANDISE, LOVE IS NOT SUCH AN EASY GAME TO PLAY, RADIATOR, BODY TALK, FUNK 'N' ROLL, SINCE I MET YOU, GHETTO TOOL, GROOVE AWHILE & FROZEN TUNDRA LADY.
