Stanford Prison Experiment is one of those rare bands that can use a conventional sound with unconventional skill. While most of the band's self-titled album concentrates on riff-heavy alt rock, its composition is tight, direct, and likeable enough to overshoot whatever limitations the genre may impose. Things get even better on tracks like "Written Apology," when the band uses its rather standard constructions to more melodic effect. Over a record filled with similarly effective turns, Stanford Prison Experiment proves itself as semi-great band in a well-worn vein of rock...(AllMusic)
