Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light+ and fine spindle marks that show little.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: Stackwaddy were a British hard-edged RnB band from Manchester, they were mainly active around the late 60s to early 70s. They made just two albums in this period before splitting, this was the second. Both on John Peel’s collectable Dandelion Records. A label founded by Peel to sign unknown acts that had little chance of getting a major record contract. Clearly most on this early independent label had lesser commercial potential and most acts he signed sold in small numbers. Stack Waddy (or is it Stackwaddy?, labels and covers vary) sold less than most and both albums are quite rare, this being the least easy to trace. A loud and abrasive act and sounding quite similar to Captain Beefheart’s earlier blues albums. This one includes a superb version of Frank Zappa’s ‘Willie the Pimp’, and John Knail’s vocals are in-line with van Vliet who sang his cameo role on Zappa’s ‘Hot Rat’s album. Stack Waddy were a band that did not believe in overdubs or fancy production work. The abrasive album title, the cover states, was used when Peel asked them to do a retake of a song and was quickly told to “Bugger Off”. Within the small Dandelion catalogue, this has to be one of the hardest to find, I have had the Tractor album a few times, but this is my first one of these – I have now had both the Stack Waddy titles just once. Never professional or commercial enough to survive long-term, they soon split, their music was often performed late into the night at gigs heavily under the influence of alcohol. Uncomprosing, brash and enthusiastic, this was a high-octane unit, but in terms of sales, few noticed. If you like your albums loud, raw and uncomprising, this superb band are for you. Mix the early sound of The Edgar Broughton Band and Captain Beefheart and you have Stack Waddy. No messing on this gem, this has to be one of the best kept secrets in hard RNB, a true ‘lost’ classic on a small label, unleash it’s raw power again on this very rare record.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: EX, an unlaminated gatefold format made with quite thin card and clearly vulnerable and wear-prone. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Cover Front: Minor record impression and a few light surface creases apart, this has little else to fault. Minimal grubbiness or handling marks, this rare cover front will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Back: Even better with little to fault, odd minor light crease or mar only, exceptional I would say for this one.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The odd few traces of set-off where black rests on white and a couple of minor light creases. Little else to fault.

Top Edge: Faint rub traces only.

Bottom Edge: As above, fraction more maybe.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed, all text practically perfect and unworn, odd minor hairline crack being critical.

Corners: All corners are neat with fine shape retained, possible tiny tip-ins to the very tips by previous owner.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this highly elusive early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This elusive item should please many collectors.

The Inner: The original plain unlined inner is included too, this has moderately aged.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: A fine, properly graded Very Good++. Clean but with fine surface marks, mostly whispy hairlines from dry cloth cleaning, most-all will have seen them before. These marks have NO sound at all and this album plays very well indeed with little unwanted. A copy modestly played on all the evidence and no penetrating scratches at all. A highly elusive album that sold in tiny numbers, finding a much better example could prove immensely difficult, I am sure many collectors will enjoy this one but it’s not for the visual perfectionist of course

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliantly brash, no-nonsense record plays above its very respectable visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is almost as good as it gets. Loud, grungy and raw, this has little refinement and is no audiophile masterpiece in production. As stated above, the brash title was conceived by the band telling the producer to “Bugger Off”! when he wanted a retake of a song. Stack Waddy wanted their records to sound as ‘live’ as possible and the lack of overdubbing or cleaning up was non-negotiable. Any surface sounds are gentle, light and minor. Only three or four clicks were noted, most one stubborn speck on side two and this is an overall clean pressing. Most is loud and any minor surface sounds are largely lost in the mix. Few copies will outperform this original first pressing significantly I feel sure. Little or note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this brilliant record, this is really a powerful record and at times, quite superb. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better, if indeed you can find one at all and can be strongly recommended. Any doubts, do not bid.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
