1953 - ON THE FIRST VEE-JAY LABEL
The first Vee-Jay label design has been commonly called "the Script label" by collectors. The first variation of this label was maroon with silver printing, with "Vee-Jay Records" above the center hole with a fine wavy line under it, and there is a thin silver line around the perimeter of the label. This 45 has this type of label. Later labels had a much thicker silver band around the edge, and the words "Trade Mark Reg" appeared under the "Vee" in the logo.
 
Here's a bit of background information on Vee-Jay records which you can find on the offical Vee-Jay site:
Vee-Jay was founded in Gary, Indiana in 1953 by Vivian Carter and James C. Bracken (Mr. & Mrs. Bracken), who used their first initials for the label’s name.  The first song they ever recorded made it to the top ten of the national rhythm & blues charts.  In a short time Vee-Jay was the most successful black-owned record company in the U.S.A.. 
Vivian and Jimmy borrowed $500 to produce the first record, borrowed it from a pawnshop.  The pawnbroker’s name was Maurice Tepper.  The Spaniels graduated from the same high school my sister and I went to—Roosevelt High School in Gary.
The Spaniels at that time consisted of lead singer James “Pookie” Hudson and four of his classmates.  It was on May 5, 1953, that the group recorded the four tunes that launched the label: “Baby It’s You,” “Sloppy Drunk,” “Since I Fell For You” and “Bounce.”
The Spaniels second session in 1953 produced their second single, “The Bells Ring Out,” which didn’t sell as well as their first.  However, another tune from the session, “Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite,” took off locally upon its release.  This time, Vee-Jay was ready for national distribution, and pushed the disc to #5 R&B on their own. 
With the success of “Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite,” Vee-Jay began to form the nucleus of a house band, with musicians and guitarist William “Lefty” Bates and saxophone player Red Holloway.

ALL IN ALL:
Sam Weiss of Old Town Records summed it up: “Vee-Jay came the closest to being the number one black-owned pop label.  They had the Beatles before Capitol.  They had the Four Seasons.  They penetrated the white market like a cannonball going through butter.  Had they overcome the family and financial problems that ultimately destroyed them, they could have become as big as Motown.  They started as a rhythm and blues label, but they had the makings of a big, big major label.”

VISUAL:  VG+   Bright red vinyl with cover usage wear over entire 45. Medium gloss.  Cleaned up well.  The labels look very good

AUDIO:  VG+  Normal amount of low steady background static and some occasional quick pops. The soft pops do not take away from the great performance on this classic song. Definately good enough for a collection.

VISUAL: VG+   Looks close to side one with a few scuffs, yet, with no tangible scratches. (see photos)


AUDIO: VG+  Same static background noticable at times, but again, it does not override the music and the dynamic performance. Static is more noticable at beginning and ending of both sides. A must for collectors who want this 45 with at least a VG+ audio playback with out heavy noise, skips, or skipovers. A very nice 45 RPM.

Vegas Vault was developed to share my hobby of enjoying music with others.
I am an avid Music lover and Musician. I began my life in New York City and grew up with the sounds of all the latest bands. I was there for the Beatles and onward. I attended many concerts in New York and elsewhere. I moved to PA and  have over the years collected thousands of albums that I have sold, kept and looked for again.  My current collection is extensive and I continue to seek out those long lost favorites. The albums we find are from many different places such as;  private owners, flea markets, auctions, yard sales and antique shops throughout the Appalachian mountain region of Pennsylvania.  The condition varies greatly per album. I do my best to grade fairly and precisely. Once in my care-I CLEAN the RECORDS WITH my NITTY GRITTY RECORD CLEANING MACHINE, grade them, and store them properly.  With my sharp ear for clarity of sound I notice any hissing or pops and will state so in the listing. GRADING SYSTEM
PLEASE READ GRADING SCALE AT THE BOTTOM FOR COMPLETE GUIDE ON OUR GRADING SYSTEM BEFORE BIDDING!  Most albums are graded Visually and/or audibly. We will specify both due to the fact that albums may look one way but play another.


SS=Mint- Stilled Sealed with shrink wrap intact. Never opened so never played. Perfect. 
NM = VINYL-  Near mint, or unplayed condition, perfect gloss, NO MARKS. AUDIO- wonderful sound quality NO noise at all. COVER- is nice and new looking with little defects and no ring wear.
VG++ = VISUALLY- Slight signs of wear;  high gloss, very clean, very few very light cover  usage surface marks. One or two extremely light hairline needle marks that do not distract from sound quality.   AUDIO-  Barely any audible noise at all- occasional soft static. COVER- has little wear -slightly wore corners- glossy pictures, very faint ring wear-still in good collectible condition.
VG+ = VISUALLY-  light to moderate surface wear such as overall cover usage marks and several light hairline needle marks, some light scuffing, light gloss.. AUDIO-  has light noticeable  noise or occasional soft crackling or occasional pop. Sound quality is still good. COVER-  has moderate wear such as bending or cutouts, noticeable beginnings of ring wear or beginnings of a seam split..
VG = VISUAL-  overall  wear with little gloss, cover usage marks heavy, a lot of needle marks that are not deep, some moderate scuffing.  AUDIO-  no serious defects, moderate noticeable continuous crackling during play that is noisier during quiet passages. More than average pops and snaps, possible skipovers , but no repetative skips.  COVER- well worn, overall normal ring wear,bad seam splits, and bends, possible small amount of water damage.
VG- = Heavy wear on record with extreme amount of cover usage marks-heavy scratches, with skips, and a lot of noise. Cover very worn, large tears,  heavy amount of water damage, heavy writing, heavy ring wear. We will not give guarantee or refunds on VG- or worse condition records. Normally you will only find these albums in our store for you to purchase for hole fillers.
