1965 ARGO (DA 37) Tracks as follows...
1) The soft sea of a summer afternoon 2) The angry sea of winter 3)The lighthouse sounds its warning in a sea mist 4) A foggy night in a busy port 5) Crossing the Mersey on board the SS Claughton. In the engine room and on deck 6) On board ship: At sea in foul weather 7) Evening in harbour: The fishing boats leaving harbour at Whitby.
A contemporary review from The Gramophone magazine...
A change from trains. After all, even in a space age an island remains an island, and this record must surely appeal to us all; particularly in this case to anyone in Liverpool, where a longish band is devoted to the S.S. Claughton crossing the Mersey from Birkenhead in thick fog. As every London schoolboy, who has spent happy hours on the Woolwich free ferry, knows, this small-scale exercise can have all the thrill of an Atlantic crossing; bells, toots, the sound of creaking wood and the lap of water. "At sea in foul weather" speaks for itself, all too eloquently, and the atmosphere of the engine room comes over well on the band devoted to a ship leaving port. The two bands devoted to the sea itself in different moods off the South Coast might have caused Debussy to re-think La Mer, and it is fitting that the record should end quietly in harbour at Whitby, with the fishing fleet going out for the evening trawl, children playing on the jetty and the very different sounding bells from the church on the East Cliff. All this represents a new triumph for the Transacord engineers.
