Musically, the Album is a BRIDGE between Sonny Rollins who rose quickly to a position of top rank among the saxophonists of the post-bop era of Modern Jazz development in the fifties and the Sonny Rollins to be of the sixties.
This is no idle puffing up of this Album’s significance for it bridges a very real gap over two years during which Sonny stopped appearing in public in order to study, try out ideas, and make the time to think about himself, his music, and the environment in which he played and lived. What phase could more clearly or more concisely and with greater impact convey the sense of currency and urgency that has always pervaded modern jazz? All the compositions in this Album qualify as modern jazz standards. Five of the composers - Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and John Lewis -- are among the best of the earliest instrumentalists/writers of this movement. WAY OUT WEST - S-7017 STEREO 180 GRAM RARE STEREO EDITION
Mastered off the original 2-track tape recorded with a tube AKG-C12 microphone on a tube Ampex 350 machine. Features Ray Brown on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the fifties, Prestige's Movin' Out and Colossus, Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny, and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics.
The session for Way Out West, Rollins' first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: "I'm hot now."

The critics who had been slow in recognizing what fellow jazzmen already knew-that here was a young giant in our midst-could not help see the light. Tenor Madness, in which Sonny Rollins was joined by the rhythm section from the Miles Davis Quintet, further substantiated his rapidly rising stature. The material is an effective mixture of Rollins' playing attitudes with an intriguing original, "Paul's Pal," and the mining of unusual material such as "My Reverie" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World." The celebrated title track features John Coltrane. Mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray.

On Impulse has only five tracks, but each tells the complex, glorious story of Rollins' talent, especially in the stretched-out solos where his knack for inventively, endlessly de- and re-constructing is evident.
