Description
SILVER APPLES : SILVER APPLES
Classic self-titled debut lp ~ Promo-only Mono ~ With color insert & three stickers
Electronic/psychedelic duo featuring the unique sound of the Simeon
Rare mono issue ~ LP sight grades EXcellent (VG++) ~ Kapp KL 1562 "Radio Station Copy" ~ 1968 ~ White label promo
Thick-stock reflective silver cover grades EX with minor ring wear (no slices, cut-out holes, punches, writing etc.) The scans make the ring wear look worse than it actually is. The spine is intact and legible but has slight creasing. There is very slight corner wear. Seams are intact except for a half inch split on the top seam at the opening edge. Both seams have very slight flaking. The intact red sticker on the cover says : "Full Color Souvenir Poster Enclosed".
The gatefold insert is in excellent shape with very slight yellowing and a tiny hole punch which is very hard to see. The insert features almost 30 color snapshots of the duo & their cool equipment on a rooftop, plus the song titles, brief liner notes and a short poem by W.B. Yeats.
There are two stickers on the back cover : 1. a tiny white one that says MONO attached over the word Stereo (mono covers were not made for this title) 2. a rectangular sticker that reads : "Promotional Copy, NFS". The larger sticker shows a bit of wear. Both are intact.
The seldom-seen Kapp white promo labels are very sharp with no spindle marks, writing etc.
The record has a few faint surface marks/paper scuffs that are strictly cosmetic. The vinyl is thick, inflexible, black & shiny.
Here is an [edited] review of this obscure but groovy title :
" The music on Silver Apples was unlike anything anyone had previously heard. Simeon layered his oscillators to create a collage of sounds that seemed to be recorded in outer space and then transmitted back to earth for your listening pleasure. The lead oscillator produced a tone akin to a theremin, contributing not only to the out-of-this-world quality, but its shaky, hyper-quiver added an air of tension. A hypnotic one- or two-chord rhythm pattern of bass notes held the tunes together, while Simeon played counter- and counter-counter-rhythms. Danny Taylor proved to be an innovative drummer, producing an array of interesting beats and fills. He also tuned his drums so he could change chords with Simeon. A song like "Lovefingers" would build with a drum and bass pattern, before bursting with waves of sound from the oscillators. Many of the tracks on Silver Apples have a subtle catchiness to them, possessing a pop mentality that isn't immediate. Simeon's "Simeon" is what pulls you in on first listens, but it is the songs that stay with you when you're away from the turntable. Compositions were kept short -- all are four minutes or less, with the exception of the tribal "Dancing Gods" -- further preserving the pop-song ethics." ~ AMG

The Bear Says : "Here is a rare white label promo Mono copy of SILVER APPLES the duo's self-titled debut lp issued on Kapp in 1968. The band, supposedly hailing from New Orleans, consisted of a drummer and a "keyboardist". A cat named Simeon, (creator of the strange instrument called "The Simeon",) and his percussionist Danny Taylor delivered a unique and very psychedelic sound on this record. I seem to remember seeing this group perform live at a bowling alley in Cincinnati for about 20 people. They were incredible !! The title was not issued in Mono commercially. The 38-year old record shows very slight wear and sight grades EX, not far from Near Mint minus. The original cover has a bit of shelf wear but remains in Excellent shape as does the gatefold insert, described in detail above. Any original copy of SILVER APPLES is a scarce item these days but a white label Mono copy is very rare. While definitely far from the Mainstream, both of this groups' LPs belong in the collection of any true Psych fan. Discover SILVER APPLES for yourself. The flame is its own reflection !!"
