Shylock was a fairly unique band. Stylistically they were a symphonic rock band, but their music had a haunting darkness about it. In a way, their music predates the dark atmosphere that the black metal bands of today capitalize on. However, Shylock’s music, though punctuated with plenty of aggression, lacks that hyper aggressiveness, focusing on that velvety rich atmosphere and shifting dynamics.

Compositionally this band is interesting. One of the pieces begins in a somewhat nocturnal and sinister fashion, and as it transitions through several themes, it begins to build into a strangely triumphant peak, almost as if there is some sort of release into happier waters. Then, after a moment of such radiance, the music violently swirls back into darkness.

Though the guitar tone can occasionally summon up King Crimson, this music is more traditionally in the symphonic rock style, and the darkness that Shylock summons is more dark castles and forests than it is the urbane dread of Crimson. Surprisingly, a lot of guitar solos and riffs resemble a lot of stuff popping up on 80s metal records (e.g. some eerie similarities here to Metallica’s Ride the Lightning).
