THE RARE MONO VERSION OF THIS ALBUM CONTAINS DIFFERENT MIXES FROM THE STEREO VERSION.
"Aftermath" holds the distinction of being the first Rolling Stones album composed solely of original music, the result of a productive session by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in a Los Angeles studio. The necessity of quickly padding an album with suitable songs became a thing of the past. Although "Aftermath" may not hold the same weight as some of their subsequent iconic albums, it undeniably stands strong in its own right. Interestingly, it could have been even more impactful.
The Stones unleashed "19th Nervous Breakdown" a few months prior to the album's release as a standalone track. This vivid and rhythmic rocker was underpinned by a richly textured soundscape that complemented Jagger's vocals. It climbed to number two on the American charts, and could easily have found a place on "Aftermath". The US also saw the release of the two-sided single "Lady Jane/Mother's Little Helper".
In those days, both sides of a single could feature on the charts. "Lady Jane", incorporated into "Aftermath", peaked at number 24. Conversely, "Mother’s Little Helper," was included in the UK album, not the US version, even though it made the top ten. This standout track deserved a spot on "Aftermath."
Brian Jones truly shined on "Aftermath", showcasing his talents on a multitude of instruments: the sitar on “Paint It Black,” dulcimer on “Lady Jane,” sax on “Flight 505,” harmonica on “Goin’ Home,” and an African xylophone on “Under My Thumb.” Despite his declining influence on the Stones' musical direction, Jones' instrumental genius enriched the studio tracks. The instrumental novelties in the early Rolling Stones discography can be credited largely to Jones' creativity and skill.
“Paint It Black” remains one of the most cherished Rolling Stones singles. The song's moody lyrics and ominous sound, bolstered by Charlie Watts' drumming and Jones' sitar, cemented the Stones' image at that time.
“Lady Jane” offers a delightful ballad for Jagger, but "Mother’s Little Helper" would have been a stronger choice. Jones' dulcimer lends the track a regal quality.
“Under My Thumb” is a classic, energetic Stones rocker, held together by an innovative fuzz guitar. The song delves into sexual exploitation, a theme that resonated with the Stones' persona at the time. “Stupid Girl” explores the same theme but with a rawer, punk-like edge.
“Goin Home,” an eleven-minute blues marathon, wraps up the first half of the American release. It's the longest Stones song ever recorded, with guitars and harmonica interacting while Jagger's vocals ebb and flow throughout.
“High and Dry” introduces superb acoustic guitar and harmonica elements that take the song down a country path. No track on the album falls flat, with less familiar gems such as "Think", "Doncha Bother Me", "Flight 505", and "It's Not Easy" serving as high points.
Upon release, "Aftermath" was an immediate commercial hit in the United States, soaring to number 2 on the Billboard charts.

THE VINY HAS JUST A FEW VERY LIGHT SURFACE MARKS. LOOKS HARDLY PLAYED OR USED. I DID PLAY TEST PART OF THIS LP BECAUSE OF IT’S AGE AND IT SOUNDS GREAT.
