Finnish melodic doom metal act Sentenced brought in a new, cleaner-sounding vocalist and took their songwriting to the next level on their 1996 release, DOWN. With hard-charging, anthemic melodies and a gloomy ambiance as thick as pea soup, DOWN is dark and heavy enough to be underground, but too musical and hummable to stay buried forever. Fans of influential kindred spirits Mercyful Fate will recognize the melancholic power in songs such as "Noose," "Keep My grave Open," and "Sun Won't Shine," but the keyboard-washed, brooding beauty of DOWN is all Sentenced.
