Giuseppi Verdi: RIGOLETTO Robert Merrill, Anna Moffo, Alfredo Kraus RCA Italiana Orchestra & Chorus, Rome Georg Solti, conductor
RCA Victor Red Seal LSC-7027 Stereo, Dynagroove First Edition, 1964 2LP Box Set
This 1964 studio recording, one of the earliest stereo versions of Rigoletto, also took on the mission of restoring the opera to its original and complete form, stripping away the many cuts and interpolations that had accrued to it in traditional performance practice. That mission statement, by RCA's Musical Director at the time, dominates the back cover. But casting that aside, this version remains one of the highest regarded sets of this oft-recorded work, for the sheer quality of the singing and music-making. With a cast headed by Robert Merrill as Rigoletto, Anna Moffo as Gilda, and Alfredo Kraus as the Duke, under the baton of Georg Solti...that should come as no surprise. In his book Opera on Record, Alan Blythe calls this "one of the fieriest of modern performances...Moffo's hauntingly unpredictable Gilda and the sensitivity and sheer motoric impulse of Solti's conducting are things one does not easily forget."
