Scarce 1971 first pressing in old unipak gatefold cover...***STILL SEALED***which is very hard to find this nice after 40 years....The title track, Your Daily Gift, is the apex of highs on this highly respected progressive album It is just an ethereal composition and Annisette's vocal performance is out of this world.
Denmark’s Savage Rose are one of the greatest European experimental, progressive bands. Legendary rock critic Lester Bangs ranted and raved over the Rose and lead singer (female) Anisette’s stunning vocal approach. He once described the frightening, powerhouse lead singer: “Grace Slick at 78 RPM”; “Minnie Mouse on a belladonna jag” and he also wrote about organ notes “pouring like star drifts down from vast black skies” -- were a reason to believe in the magic and life force of the Savage Rose.
The Savage Rose were a band of rare beauty and courage – singing in English but rapidly inventing their own rock & roll tongue, a new sound of psych/progressive music , Beatlemania, and European art song. In Anisette, the Savage Rose possessed an extraordinary instrument of confession and jubilation, a mighty R&B angel packed into a slender stick of hellfire. There is rich drama, too, in the group’s exquisite keyboard interplay, the avant-garage tension of their riffs and rhythms and the dynamic songwriting of Thomas and Anders Koppel.
"Your Daily Gift" was the fourth album and easily one of their strongest early albums, with both great energetic rockers like "Sunday Morning" and "The Waters Run Deep" and beautiful acoustic ballads like "Poorest Man on Earth" and "Lightly Come, Lightly Go". Melodic beauty in "Unfold". "Speak Softly" is a "Jealous Guy" type ballad and as mentioned at the start, the title track is unforgettable.
Your Daily Gift opens with the original rocker, "Sunday Morning," which displays Anisette's Minnie mouse voice to great effect. "The Waters Run Deep," the first song on side two, should have been an American hit. The tune is mesmerizing, with a garagey guitar opening and a wonderful chorus ready-made for the masses. This European group should have been huge crafting such intelligent music with smart songwriting and on-target performances. The band's production on Your Daily Gift is excellent, and the 1971 release has heavy organ on "Tapiola," which could have fit right on the Tetragrammaton label's Deep Purple albums or early work by Vanilla Fudge. "Listen to This Tune From Mexico" is adventurous with driving overtones, while "Unfold" has that harpsichord that sounded so great on "Walk Away Renee" by Left Banke, the difference being Anisette's personality, which comes through to give this band their identity and presence. Speak Softly sounds like the Ronettes doing a ballad and can be summed up in only one word: immaculate. "Lightly Come, Lightly Go" is subtitled "Song for an Unborn Child ? Sarah's song."
Savage Rose needed was a manager who would place their great material with other artists to help generate a buzz. Your Daily Gift is overall a strong, heartfelt album.
