Description

Midnight Dread celebrates Lee 'Scratch' Perry's 70th Birthday March 20th, 2006 with a special set of auctions including this original 7" Jamaican reggae 45 produced by Lee Perry: Lord Sassafrass & Debra Keeys "Green Bay Inquest" / The Upsetters "Dub Inquest" (Upsetter records)

original 1978 Upsetter single
LORD SASSAFRAS & DEBRA KEESE
GREEN BAY INQUEST
THE UPSETTERS
DUB INQUEST
Produced by Lee 'Scratch' Perry

The infamous military intelligence massacre at the Green Bay Jamaica firing range in December 1977 gets saved for posterity in this stunning achievement in sound judgement. Debra Keye's transfixing "Traveling" rhythm and vocal provides the foundation for Sassafras' verbal volleys amidst Scratch's swirling sonic sculptures. When the big neck police got off for their slaughter of the South Side Posse leaders it only made the Upsetter madder as he steamed off his crucial condemnation in phased drum and bass echo attacks. The dub dives deep into Debra's vocals as Sassafras' intensity swells. Song credited to King David, another sign of brinksmanship. Scratch forged this classic bit of 'newspaper on wax' in the latter days of The Black Ark (1978).

As David Katz relates in his brilliant book PEOPLE FUNNY BOY The Genius Of Lee 'Scatch' Perry: "The sad moment in Jamaica's increasingly discordant history would quickly be immortalisd on vinyl and Perry was one of the first producers to cut material commenting on the event. (He used Sassafras on the 'Dreadlocks In Moonlight' rhythm for 'Green Bay Incident'.) When the government later refused to bring the eight soldiers who had carried out the killings to trial, Perry recorded Sassafras on a follow-up single called 'Green Bay Inquest', using the rhythm of "Travelling", a minor hit by a little known singer named Debra Keese. According to Earl Sixteen, Keese was another young hopeful that appealed to Perry's carnal instincts. Based in the Waterhouse ghetto, Sassafras (a.k.a. Michael Johnson) deejayed for the Soul Expert sound in the early 1970s and later joined the Black Scorpio set; at the time of the Green Bay Masssacre, he rode his bicycle to Perry's studio on a daily basis, begging Scratch for a chance on the mike." from the Chapter THE EXCESSIVE APEX AND SUDDDEN FALL OF THE ARK. 'The transgressors shall be destroyed and the wicked shall be cut down. The earth shall change and the wicked shall quake in this a Green Bay Inquest' -Lord Sassafras.
