About ten seconds into this album, all of a sudden you realize you are not in Kansas anymore. Colors disappear and everything goes black-and-white. The European existentialism starts swirling around you, the twister of doom and gloom and pain of futility of human existence engulfs everything…the classic neogothic victoriana swallows everything, Toto included. This is the ultimate thinking-man's album: all those slow, mournful , dirge-like songs, delivered in an impossibly mellifluous, deep and resonant baritone of Scott Walker reminiscent to that of Fred Neil or Tim Buckley and almost as resonant as a big cosmic AUMMM. Many of the critics of the 1960's and 1970's considered Scott Walker only a third-rate imitator of Jacques Brel (and, of course, this album could not pass without a rich helping of Brel covers), but the passage of time has been remarkably kind to him, his music and his songs have aged astonishingly well, and he has acquired a huge cult followership over the years. This, his THIRD solo album from the 1960's is probably his finest: the songs range from playful to very dark and most profoundly pessimistic and brooding. An intense listening, not for the faint of heart. Scott Walker's final British Top Ten album was the first to be dominated by his own songwriting. Ten of the 13 tunes on this 1969 LP are originals; the remaining three, naturally, were written by one of his chief inspirations, Jacques Brel. There are some interesting moments here. "Big Louise" talks about a hefty prostitute with shocking explicitness for a pop star album of the era. "Copenhagen" (like much of Walker's '60s work) foreshadows David Bowie. "Funeral Tango" is a particularly vicious Brel song. "30 Century Man" is an uncommonly folkish and focused tune for Walker. "We Came Through" is an oddball cavalry charge featuring one of his occasional forays into Ennio Morricone spaghetti Western-like production. The tension between Walker's dense, foreboding lyrics and orchestral production is unusual, to say the least. But too often, it's too difficult to penetrate Walker's insights through Wally Scott's string-drenched production. It shrouds the lyrics in a fog that's often too syrupy to justify the effort needed to fight through it.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine    (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.   (nothing significant)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.  Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold
