Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only a couple of light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This another gem from the superb collection of very lightly played records, purchased from new by the one-and-only owner who played them very sparingly on a high quality system.

Cat Number: ILPS 9207.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 146 grams. The heaviest pressing of this I have ever had.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce and very difficult to find with such a clean record and cover. The cover is made with soft card, being dark and soft with a very slight surface texturing, it always wear badly and is often seen ruined by sticker tears and severe edge rubbing and ringwear. The record I have found over time to be a notorious crackler, often all the way through and seldom does it offer pristine sound. This one does almost that with only a little gentle trace noted on the final song, this light and minor, this too being played on a very revealing turntable. So not an entirely blemish-free copy, but a real beauty compared to most I have seen previously. At last, a copy that does this truly beautiful album near maximum justice and such copies are elusive.

Brief Info: Featuring a stunning front cover portrait by famous photographer, David Bailey, this was Sandy Denny’s second ‘solo’ album. She had previously made three with Fairport Convention and one with Fotheringay (also on offer). Eight of the songs were self-written. A truly beautifuly album in every way, wonderful music and packaging (but fragile), the material was perfect for her voice and includes some lovely string and brass arrangements. This lady was pure class and still one of my favourite female vocalists ever. This very early, heavy pressed copy is a beauty too. The record has clearly hardly been played and sounds marvellous and that’s never easy. The cover is very delicate indeed and made with the thinnest of card which is very slightly textured, dark and unlaminated, these are usually found badly worn and damaged and this the best I have seen for some considerable time, not quite perfect but setting a very high standard – it has a crease on the back top corner, but little else of any real note. Also included is the Island blue inner which again is in fine condition. So arguably Sandy’s best ever ‘solo’ album and one most collectors will treasure.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated, lightly textured, matt finished gatefold format. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front: Beautiful beyond words, this must be the ultimate published Sandy Denny portrait and unusually still looking in supreme condition – this being a very intolerant and delicate sleeve. There is barely any wear at all and this retains all its glorious colour with no fading, rubbing or creasing. Any creases are ultra fine and confined to the very edges, the odd tiny cornertip rub but this stunning front is practically as good as they ever really get.

Cover Back: In most respects, almost the same again, but there is a moderate crease near the top right corner. A smallish rub near the bottom left corner also, but little else to fault on a beyond wear-prone back that is so often seen deeply impregnated with ringwear. This has none at all and has barely even a trace of rim impression. The rich deep brown-black colour and its text is near immaculate, the lack of rubbing rare and unusual. The only smallish issue is the crease and it’s hardly major, but present nonetheless.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Stunning, both look as new and these truly beautiful again.

Top Edges: Any rub traces are near microscopic and few up to the right back corner tip that has a small rub. This pair are very straight too.

Bottom Edges: Three tiny surface rubs and a small rub on the back left end. Mostly straight but a light wave near the left corner, seen viewed end-on – I am being quite critical here.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with little wear and no feathering, both are guaranteed untrimmed. Any burr traces or thickening to the very delicate soft card is very light indeed and there is barely a chip to be seen. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: Such a soft and fragile spine, finding a perfect one will prove near impossible these days. This reamins solid and quite straight with minimal compression and folded very square. All edges meet up quite closely together and parallel. The actual surface shows barely any rubbing and the really great news is, ALL text is pristine and totally unworn – seldom seen this on this one.

Corners: The spine pair show little wear and the right ones only mostly very small tip rubs. The bottom back corner has a 1 cm surface rub. One or two small tip creases but overall, these are hugely respectable for a delicate cover, the shape is very fine and arguably better still.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. For sure all the pluses far outweigh the minuses, I have rarely seen all the main faces and spine showing so little wear. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(-): the lined Island inner has some crinkle and a little mild browning on the seams. Few real creases and all edges unsplit, retaining fine colour too, these often fade. This has the original text: ‘island records ltd basing street london w11’.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and a mere whisker off Mint(-). A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed for a record of this period. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and barely a noteworthy mark or blemish to be seen. Any surface traces tiny, few and very faint indeed. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record mostly plays up to its high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very impressive with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Beautifully produced with very lush audio quality, Sandy’s vocals have an in-the-room quality and will rarely sound better. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, but as mentioned above, a little gentle surface sound was just noted on the final song. A very critical track and a bit like ‘Crazy Man Michael’ on the ‘Liege & Lief’Fairports album, this rarely will play dead silent. This is a very challenging album to find that will play this well throughout. The vocals are quite intense with some dynamic louder parts that often break up with crackle and distortion. Throughout this copy, all the beauty and clarity of Sandy’s voice is clear, focused and precise with no clipping or reverb. Two reasons for this: firstly this is a very fine early pressing and second, this copy has NEVER been exposed to any damaging heavyweight record players or their thick tipped pickups. The one-and-only owner had a quality stereo system and played his records sparingly and with utmost care. No-one but him was ever allowed to touch them and they were NEVER loaned out. Thus far I have played over fifty from this collection (with loads more cleaned and ready to go), every one plays near perfectly and these are the sorts the more discerning collectors will want to listen to. No pops or clicks were noted and this was a highly enjoyable play-grade. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Okay, the cover has a mild corner crease, these things happen in nearly forty years, but this sets a very high standard. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
