Description
Artist: Robert Copeland
A: I Could Never Deny
B: Will You Be My Girl?
Label: Zell's 250/251
Year: 196?
Style: 60's R'n'B
Condition: M- : Never really DJed this one, so both sides are perfectly shiny and clean!
Here's a great record that's been in my collection for years but doesn't really fit my DJ set.
This is possibly the first ever release on Zell Sanders' Zell's label...I haven't been able to find any information about Robert Copeland, but the record seems to predate all the Girl Group records that Zell put out (and were recently reissued by Ace). Zell of course is the genius and amazing businesswoman behind the Jaynetts as well as many later funk records. This 45 is more in the early 60's R'n'B style and the singing reminds me if anything of Nathaniel Mayer (albeit in a much cleaner recording environment and stripped of the doowop backing vocals).
The A-Side is a slow ballad (click here for sample clip: I Could Never Deny) but the b is a good midtempo number (sample clip: Will You Be My Girl?)
I've never seen another copy of this 45 (I've had it for about 4 years) so I think it might be incredibly rare. One of the interesting details is that each side of the record has a different number so this release is 250/251 unlike all the later 45s on this label which only had the one number on each side. A great addition to your rare R'n'B collection or your Zell Sanders set!
