Description
This is a rare Presentation Copy of Thomas Edison's "Let Us Not Forget" Diamond Disc record from 1919. This particular disc was sent, on Edison's behalf, by his assistant William H. Meadowcroft to W. H. Atkins, the head of the Edison Illuminating Co. of Boston. In the preceading letter, dated April 22nd 1919, Meadowcroft states that he would be sending to him with Mr. Edison's "compliments". Instead of being sent in the special paper sleeve that these sometimes came in, it was sent in one of the hinged boxes that the earliest Diamond Disc records were sold in c. 1912-3. This one does not have a selection label on it which they normally would have, of course. Either the sleeve wasn't yet available or more likely they wanted to "fancy it up" and took one of the discontinued boxes, added the gold paper that the record is wrapped in, and sent the disc off that way. Whatever the reason, this is a unique example of this disc. As you can see, the letter has been paper clipped to the gold wrapping paper and has torn at the top. Also, the box hinge is incomplete as are the box sides.
W. H. Atkins began working for Edison in 1887 and didn't retire until 1932. I’m including a return envelope with his name as an extra.
