Continuing the slow sell-off of my own Jazz collection, 2000 LPs accumulated over 50 years of buying and listening, culling and selling--those for sale now my own saved favorites, in other words. All those i bought new are at least Mint- and usually Mint, really. Any used ones in lesser condition, i'll describe. Still working back up though the alphabet, today ending the Charlie Parker rarities and collectibles...
Finally the single Parker box set i think of as irreplaceable:
Mint discs in Mint jackets inside a Mint- "solander"-styled flipover outer box--never knew it existed till i bid on and bought it--my cherished copy of six-record set English Spotlite 101-106, Charlie Parker on Dial Volumes 1 through 6, housed in the orange-on-gray Dial Collectors Jazz library box, and actually titled The Dial Masters Volume 1, with each disc displaying the original Dial look of orange/yellow/white label rather than usual Spotlite black. The Spotlite issues from the early Seventies were the single best-ever presentation of Parker's Dial sessions; this 1982 version only improves on that!
As the catalog says (yes, i have also enclosed a copy machine-styled original multi-page Spotlite catalog from '82), "... all surviving takes from Bird's 8 recording sessions for Dial. A total of 39 tunes, 88 seperate (sic) cuts and a total of some 270 minutes of improvisation by the Kansas City flash who never played anything twice the same way. No sessions split up and all are in chronological sequence."
But to further complete the package, i have added a Mint- copy of Charlie Parker Records PLP-408, Once There Was Bird, a '62 issue of the tracks recorded in 1945 by Red Norvo and His Selected Sextet--Bird, Dizzy Gillespie, Flip Phillips, Norvo, Teddy Wilson, Slam Stewart, and Specs Powell or J.C Heard--a fascinating example of old meeting new, Swing energizing Bop (or vice versa); first released on Comet 12" 78s and later acquired and partially reissued by Dial. Here are 11 takes and alternates of Hallelujah, Get Happy, Slam Slam Blues, and Congo Blues.
All seven albums plus the catalog fit happily in the Dial box. I value this one highly indeed...
