SARAH VAUGHAN * Snowbound * Umgeben von den besänftigenden Streichern des Arrangeurs Don Costa hat Sarah Vaughan hier, nicht überraschend, eine träumerische Balladenkollektion mit dem Titel "Snowbound" aufgenommen. Trotz der friedvollen Atmosphäre und des geruhsamen Tempos sieht Vaughan in dem Material durchaus die Herausforderung für ihre Stimme; bei allen dieser elf Lieder sucht sie nach verschiedenen Wegen, abgenutzte Standardsongs neu zu präsentieren. Der titelgebende Song am Anfang ist einer der wärmsten und romantischsten der LP, Vaughan lotet die Tiefen ihrer Altstimme aus und perfektioniert dabei nahezu ihr summendes Vibrato. Außerdem wählt sie ein unbedeutendes Lied der Gershwins ("Blah, Blah, Blah", aus verständlichen Gründen sonst übersehen, aber dennoch vergnüglich), um sich, kurz vor Schluss, von den gemütlichen Balladen ab- und einer Mini-Abfolge todtrauriger Songs zuzuwenden: "I Fall in Love Too Easily", "Glad To Be Unhappy" und "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most". "Snowbound" ist ein übersehenes Juwel aus Sarah Vaughans Roulette-Jahren.

Produktion: Teddy Reig Wrapped in the soothing strings of arranger Don Costa, Sarah Vaughan recorded an unsurprisingly dreamy ballads collection titled "Snowbound". Despite the peaceful atmosphere and strolling tempo, Vaughan hardly treats the material as a cinch for her voice; all of these 11 songs find her searching for different ways to present timeworn standards. The opening title track is one of the warmest, most romantic songs on the LP, Vaughan plumbing the depths of her alto and nearly perfecting her humming vibrato. She also selects an obscure tune from the Gershwins ("Blah, Blah, Blah", understandably overlooked but fun nevertheless) and, near the end, turns from cozy ballads into a mini-suite of forlorn material: "I Fall in Love Too Easily", "Glad to Be Unhappy", and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most". "Snowbound" is an overlooked gem from Sarah Vaughan's Roulette years.
