U.K.ORIGINAL 1968 FONTANA Stereo LABEL (Cat.No.SFJL.915)
The vinyl is in "EX-plus" condition.It has been played,but very carefully ,in it's long life.Plays beautifully.Both labels are clean and unmarked,though display some spindle-marks (especially true of side 2-obviously the first side has seen much more service on the deck than it's flipside).The faint stamped matrix numbers are:886507 1Y (triangle) 1 and: 886507 2Y (triangle) 1.
The LP comes housed in what looks like it's original paper and poly-lined inner sleeve.
The cover is in "EX-minus" condition.Laminated on the front only.There no marks as such , just the faintest impression of ring-wear.There are a few superficial creases along the spine at the bottom and near the opening.These notice because of the shiny black background.The full-colour picture of the famous London Embankment landmark of the title with a "cleo" type of exotic-babe and ROSS himself seated on it looks better.Hasn't dulled with age.The reverse , which is full of sleeve-notes by Patrick James topped by the essential recording info, is in an equally clean state.Hardly any discolouration that these white buff card sleeves suffer from.One or two minor creases on the laminated edge and a slight mark where someone once wrote the number "15"in pen.(This is hardly visible now.)In the centre of the back-cover is a b&w shot of ROSS and "cleo" at the top of the needle.
Truely a fine example of British modern jazz at it's best.Perhaps this LP represents the high-water mark of ROSS's career as a leader.Certainly is the man's most sought-after recording.Cut during June 1968 the record features two line-up's/two sessions.Along with RONNIE ROSS's own bountiful baritone sax (Ross,who died in1991,was quite a mainstay of the U.K. jazz scene and a multi-instrumenalist playing also alto,tenor,clarinet as well as flute.Much in demand as a session-musician too;witness his famous sax on Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wildside" not to mention lots of others ,including stints with Matt Bianco , in the '70's/'80's) we get LES CONDON's trumpet;Vibist and pianist BILL LE SAGE (sadly now gone too,though I had the pleasure of seeing him live a few times at Ealing and elsewhere);Bassist SPIKE HEATLEY, who along with tenorist ART ELEFSEN and ROSS himself is the only constant on the whole record ; and either RONNIE STEPHENSON or TONY CARR on drums.
