RONNIE DAWSON
obscure Texas rocker
Ronnie Dawson is one of the best rockabilly acts to come out of the Dallas area and was the subject recently of a 2-CD set from Dragon Street Records of his amazing catalog of songs. He was only a youngster when he first started playing at the Big D Jamboree and began a string of records with titles like "Rockin' Bones," "Action Packed" and "I Make The Love."
By the time that the '50s gave way to the '60s, Ronnie was still at it, and still making some great records. Most of these were with little labels and catching up with all of them can be a real challenge. This one, is Ronnie Dawson under the name Commonwealth Jones. He recorded a single for Columbia under this name, but this one is the rarely seen 45 he did around the same time for Banner Records in Lubbock.
The group here is Ronnie Dawson on guitar and vocals, Smokey Montgomery on drums, Bill Hudson on guitar and Kenn Cobb on bass, and Delbert McClinton on harmonica.
According to Bill Crawford, the owner of the label, a 1972 flood of the Guadeloupe River in Sequine, Texas destroyed the original masters of this record and any unsold stock, so it's pretty scarce these days, 40 years later. The songs here are "Jump And Run" and "Tied Down." While the topside is a sort of a rockin' country tune, the flip is rather bluesy and has a good harmonica solo by Delbert.
