ROBERT POLLARD with DOUG GILLARD Speak Kindly Of Your Volunteer Fire Department LP released on Fading Captian Series #FCS4 :: Limited Edition Vinyl LP, Rare & OUT OF PRINT! Contains postcard sheet that includes postcards for all of the first 4 Fading Captain Series releases! This one is Pollard's strongest "solo" effort yet, and it should probably be considered part of the GBV catalog. Current GBV guitar hero, member of Cleveland's Gem, and former Cobra Verde alum Doug Gillard recorded all of the instrumental tracks on a 4-track cassette recorder. This gives the album a "home-grown" feel that older GBV is famous for, complete with tape hiss and weird interludes, but this time with Gillard's finely tuned studio ear making the tracks sound far sweeter than Pollard did in his heyday. Most of the songs were written by Pollard, with Gillard getting a songwriting credit on a few tracks. The songs with the Gillard "assist" seem to be the strongest, lending credence to the idea that GBV works best when not an absolute dictatorship. (OK, I'll admit I'm a sucker for those old Tobin Sprout gems.) Doug's ability at guitar, bass, and drums allows us to explore elements of Pollard's musical universe only previously hinted at. "And I Don't (So Now I Do)" is the best song Big Star never wrote, with Gillard approximating some mean Alex Chilton licks. "Pop Zeus" is a rock anthem that stands up to anything in the Cheap Trick catalog. "Port Authority" takes the prog-rock of Yes and Genesis to school by shaving off the customary 10 minutes of wankery and leaving three captivating minutes in its Wake(man). And I dare anyone to top the bittersweet acoustic charm of "Life is Beautiful," which alone is worth the purchase price.
