THE REMASTERING
The original Mitsubishi X-80 studio digital tape was obtained from the MCA Tape Studio/Archive. This will be the first time that an audiophile reissue will be cut from this original master tape. This tape was NOT used for previous German reissue. The original master tape can only be played back accurately on an original X-80 tape machine, and Bernie Grundman's is one of the few studios that still owns this machine. Based on initial listening of the test pressings, this is an outstanding reissue that will stand up to all comparisons with the original LP or any other reissue.
Rob Wasserman: Duets
Features duets with Aaron Neville, Rickie Lee Jones, Bobby McFerrin, Lou Reed, Jennifer Warnes, Dan Hicks, Cheryl Bentyne & Stephane Grapelli.
This charming collection of duets features the bass of Rob Wasserman in a variety of different roles, from supportive to lead to orchestral. With the exception of Stephane Grappelli's violin, Lou Reed's guitar and Rickie Lee Jones' guitar and bells/percussion, every sound on this album is bass and voice, demonstrating that these two musical forces can be everything by themselves. My favorites include the joyful Brothers (with Bobby McFerrin), the weighty One For My Baby And One More For The Road (with Lou Reed), the poignant Leonard Cohen song Ballad Of The Runaway Horse (with Jennifer Warnes) and the moving Over The Rainbow (with the violin of Grappelli), quite spectacular instrumental. Stardust (with Aaron Neville) and Gone With The Wind (with Dan Hicks) are quite listenable too, but I don't enjoy Rickie Lee Jones' The Moon Is Made Of Gold, since her nasal whine is too pronounced and her delivery sounds affected and over the top. This is a successful experiment combining the human voice with the bass guitar and it delivers some very soulful sounds. It should appeal to fans of these featured artists and to everyone who loves the bass guitar.
