Brief Info: At 17 Thompson helped found Fairport Convention, in January 1971 he left the band to start a solo career and this 1972 album was his first. Hardly a solo album though, as a host of top quality musicians back and most will be more than familiar – Sandy Denny is included. This is a wonderful, slightly eccentric set and any fan of the early Fairports sound will again enjoy this one. Without doubt one of the UK’s finest songwriters and gifted guitarist with his own distinctive style, this record is sure to impress. Shortly after this ‘solo’ set, Thompson then toured and made albums with his wife, Linda and his recordings had joint credits. This is not an album that is seen that often, it initially received mixed reviews, but it has gained affection over time and many regard it as a classic. The record without doubt has hardly been played – it has four very fine marks on side two but with NO sound whatsoever and those apart, it could truly pass as new with gorgeous clean playing surfaces and wonderful audio reproduction. I have never seen a better cover for this either, it is of connoisseur quality and 40-year-old non-laminates seldom get seen looking like this. A wonderful set that deserves a place in a top collection.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated format, this early example has the deeply pinched spine ends that are very pronounced as seen on my close-up pictures. This was printed and made in England with the Island ‘i’ credits.

Cover Front: A super front that sets the standard to be beaten. The odd tiny tip rub or semi-crease being very critical but this rub and ring wear prone cover has barely any at all. The merest hint of rim impression near the top edge, but look very hard. I would doubt if this has been handled or seen light-of-day for decades.

Cover Back: Exceptional and little short of as made, even better than the impressive front with barely anything to fault.

Top Edge: Practically unworn, a tiny tip rub to the right but that’s about it – very straight too.

Bottom Edge: Again, barely any hint of wear. The most minuscule hint of thickening to the back card end being critical, again very straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring tiny and faint, this is guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Apart from some mild compression towards the centre, this is again impressive and few survive devoid or rubbing and wear. Solid, straight with the very deeply pinched ends in manufacture – both are pristine straight and devoid of rubbing. All text fully present and unworn with barely any hint or rubbing to the fragile dark folds.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and faint, all retain excellent or better shape. The two flats on the spine ends are very impressive and seldom escape dinks, bends or rubbing – but have on this one.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This splendid item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: an Island blue lined inner that includes the correct original text: ‘island records ltd basing street london w11’. This retains a deep blue colour, many fade, this one hasn’t but has some darkening of the seam adhesive that few seem to avoid over time. This is still lined – the front being proud of the opening in manufacture. Flipback constructed and quite robust with the folds neat and strong. Barely any creasing with only mild ruffling in places and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and a grading that does not do this hardly played record justice. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Side one looks superb with any surface traces few, fine and very faint as seen under angled light. Side two is largely the same with four small marks that have NO sound whatsoever. In fact this record offers fantastic clean and blemish-free sound throughout. Visually a very fine record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely vintage record plays even above it’s visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered – played as always on very revealing equipment – and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean, and very early pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this top quality pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and generally carefully handled. It would not surprise me at all if the few small marks on side two were a manufacture blemish, but that is only an opinion. Anyway, nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits my highest recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
