Description
The Jimmie Rodgers Picture disc is one of the rarest and most sought after 78 RPM picture discs in the world. RCA Victor released the disc on June 27, 1933, just 1 month after Rodger’s untimely death from tuberculosis. Only a few hundred were manufactured and even fewer survive today.
The “A” side of the picture disc is “Cowhand’s Last Ride” and features a picture of Jimmie sitting and holding his guitar. Side “B” features the song “Blue Yodel No. 12” and features the song title in the middle of the disc surrounded by Jimmie’s 11 previous blue yodels, record number, and flip side.
RCA Victor was new at manufacturing picture discs in 1933. The process was experimental and the copies have a tendency to develop lamination cracks.
Side A “Cowhands Last Ride”: There are 6 lamination cracks in the runoff area ranging in length from ½” to 1-1/2”. Two of these lamination cracks extend into the playing surface to the rim. There are three other lamination cracks in the playing surface 1-1/2” to 2-1/2” long. I believe the lams in the playing surface would affect play of the record but I have not played it in the 10 years that I have been the owner, fearing the needle would damage the record.
Side B “Blue Yodel No. 12”: There are five lamination cracks in the runoff area that vary approximately 1” to 2” in length. There are two lamination cracks less than 1.5” in length in the playing surface and a couple of light scratches.
Both sides of the record display well. The most prominent lamination cracks can be seen in the photographs.
