History

ClydeStacy emerged from the woods around Checotah in 1954 and headed to Tulsa, where he was part of the new Tulsa sound. He was discovered by a disc jockey, Don Wallace, who would later be better known as the host of a hunting and fishing show.

Wallace said the Tulsa singing star looked like Elvis Presley (See Picture) and could sing ballads and rockabilly. Wallace helped land Stacy a recording deal with Woody Hinderling of Candlelight records in New York in 1957.Stacy would soon land a spot on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand."

Stacy, 73, who lives in Muskogee County, said he doesn't have any film clips of the old days, but his memories are vivid. "It was live TV back then. They didn't do a lot of recording," Stacy said. "If you screwed up it was too bad. Bandstand was the thing to do with 10 to 20 million kids watching every show."
