Original first pressing vinyl on the scarce 'Discophoon' label...the second Group 1850 is really good! It's darker than their first Lp, "Agemo's TRip To Mother Earth" and is a bit heavier at times too, but it's just different. This is really the kind of album that puts you into a trance! If you like 'Agemo's Trip' then you'll most likely like this one too. Also, it has a lot of parts that'll probably stick with you for awhile. Not as if it were a catchy pop album, but because there's just a lot of really cool sounding infectious melodics buried in the psychedelic swirls ...
Outside of Holland and hardcore collecting circles these guys are all but unknown, which is ashamed given they were quite a talented outfit.
Group 1850 (the Dutch spelling is Groep 1850), morphed out of The Hague-based beat band The Klits, legendary in their own rite. The original line up of Group 1850 consisted of drummer Beer Klaasse, singer/keyboardist Peter Sjardin, lead guitarist Daniel van Bergen and bass player Rob de Rijke (who was quickly replaced by Rudd van Buren.)
By 1966 the band was active on the Dutch club circuit, opening for a wide variety of English and American acts, including The Kinks, Pink Floyd, The Stones, The Troggs and even The Mothers of Invention. They also scored a recording contract with Paul Acket's small Yep Records, releasing an instantly obscure single 'Misty Night'' b/w 'Look Around' (Yep catalog number 1013).
Their growing popularity caught the attention of Philip's Record label who signed them to a contract, releasing a pair of psychedelic-flavored singles: 1967's 'I Know (La Pensee)' b/w 'I Want More' (Philips catalog number J333835 and 1967's 'Mother No-Head' b/w 'Ever Ever Green (Philips catalog number J333901)
Following the release of their incredible 1968 debut "Agemos Trip To Mother Earth" the band collapsed. Klaasse, van Bergen and van Buren ended up forming Boots. Klassee then went on to join Finch. Within a year Peter Sjardin reformed the band, recruiting a new line up consisting of guitarist Dave Duba, bassist Dolf Geldolf and drummer Martin van Duynhoven.
Released by the Dutch Discofoon label, 1969's "Paradise Now" sports a sound that's quite different from their 'Agemos Trip' Lp. Ditching the peace and love pop-psych sentiments of the first album, the sophomore album features a much tougher and darker sound, drugs ooze from the grooves...stick it somewhere between the first three Pink Floyd albums, but heavier, complete with plenty of pounding guitar (courtesy of Duba). Musically the band flows along in a mixture of progressive, blues-rock and even Hendrix-inspired psych ('Purple Sky'). That said, the combination of heavily accented English vocals, totally tripped-out lyrics (check out ''Friday I'm Free') and the group's obvious enthusiasm for the material makes it kind of endearing and truly does grow the more you play it.

CONDITION: The Cover: laminated and well used, VG- having light handling creasing in lamination like old European albums get with use; general handling wear over the past 41 years...even so, it still looks collectible and for the right person who doesn't want to pay the $200 or so going rate these days...colors are still bright as the day it was released...and back cover has the old 'flipback' seams...not mint by any stretch but certainly serviceable.
The Vinyl: 60's deep groove pressing play graded VG++ with no audio problems except for some quiet areas having low passive surface, vastly clean audio is overall surpisingly enjoyable -- even with the visuals VG(+) having numerous light hairthin marks -- very durable pressing that still delivers. The Discofoon labels are clean...
A cool addition to anyone's music library!
