RADIO BROADCAST: IN CONCERT: VAN HALEN
Formed in Pasadena, California, in 1974 by Dutch-born brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen, alongside bassist Michael Anthony and charismatic frontman David Lee Roth, Van Halen completely revolutionized hard rock. At the center of their volcanic sound was Eddie Van Halen, whose pioneering "two-handed tapping" guitar technique, blinding speed, and melodic sensibilities fundamentally rewrote the vocabulary of modern rock guitar.
Uniquely, Van Halen achieved the rare feat of pulling off two entirely distinct, multi-platinum eras. In the late 1970s and early '80s, they were the ultimate Hollywood backyard party band turned stadium conquerors—fueled by Roth’s theatrical, vaudevillian showmanship. When Roth departed at the absolute height of their fame, the band recruited powerhouse vocalist Sammy Hagar, pivoting to a heavier, more polished, and keyboard-friendly arena-rock sound that yielded four consecutive Number 1 albums.
This two-hour special covers a live concert from the Mark II lineup of Van Halen.
