Many years ago, I went to college out on Long Island. Near the end of my freshman year I went to see a concert that included Blue Oyster Cult on the bill. Several of the seniors warned me as to how they were the most disliked band on the Island, and as a result kept changing their names to get gigs. Among the other names were Stalk Forrest Group and Soft White Underbelly.
Many years later, I was sent a copy of a Stalk Forrest 'demo' tape that had just started circulating around in the psych collecting circle. What I heard was not the proto-metal sounds of BOC, but tremendous West Coast late psychedelia. This tape became a favorite of all lucky enough to get a copy, and the legendary (presumed to exist) Soft White Underbelly Elektra test press became a holy grail of many knights of the psychedelic round table.
In 1998, this LP appeared as an unofficial 500 copy limited edition. It comes in one of the most beautiful covers ever made; an ultra-thick white textured cover with the name embossed on the front cover in silver hologrammed lettering. The music consists of the seven tracks found on the old tape from the elektra West Coast sessions, plus 3 previously unheard tracks from a late 1970 New York demo. The sound is far from perfect, but still light years beyond the orignal tape in quality. Needless to say, this pressing sold out very quickly and the copies available have dried up.
The cover is Mint minus. The record looks Ex (2 slight scuffs from removal from sleeve), plays Mint minus.
