IMPORTANT: I am helping my friend, Phil Ranelin – the great trombonist/composer and co-founder of the legendary Tribe record label, sell a number of extremely rare LP’s from his personal collection. Mr. Ranelin would not be parting with these if he didn’t need the money. Although he has thankfully recovered in body and spirit from a very serious car accident (late 2005) and is playing as well as ever - which is a very high level, indeed, amazingly gigs have been few and far between. As devastating as the Bush years have been for so many, you can only imagine what it’s like for a jazz musician (let alone one who is black, plays the trombone and puts forth exquisite music of substance in the jazz hinterland that is Los Angeles). Most of these recordings will be of particular interest to those who are into the spiritual jazz sounds that are often heard on the Black Jazz, ESP-Disk, Strata, Strata-East, Tribe, and similar independent labels and private pressings.
Anyway . . .
This is an original copy of an extremely rare and beautiful LP. It was recorded for the legendary Tribe record label out of Detroit in 1972 and 1973. It is strong music that was fully in tune with its time. Ironically, much of it is still quite relevant.

The vinyl is a test pressing and, truth be told, it is hammered! The first three tracks have multiple skips in them. Granted, I was able to enjoy “How Do We End All This Madness” in its entirety, but there were a number of clicks and pops. The same goes for “Wife”. “Merciful” has one small jump in the middle of it. And the incredibly funky “Beneficent” has multiple jumps. Make no mistake, this is in very rough condition and is being offered mainly for its historical nature.
The beautiful black and white cover (1st issue), on the other hand, is in quite decent condition. It’s got no writing, stickers or seam splits and is pretty clean with only a little rubwear. The main flaw is a couple creases from being bent. One is visible only on the front (upper left corner), the other is visible from both sides (upper middle).
