Hermann Goetz, Concerto for Piano and Orchetra op. 18 in B major

The Piano Concerto of Hermann Goetz ( 1840 - 1876 ) was written in 1867 and first performed, with the composer as soloist, in Basel on December 1 of that year, with repeats in Zürich and Bern. Hans von Bülow thougth highly of the piece wich was published in 1880, and Willy Rehberg later became its champion, performing it frequently and with relish. While not a showpiece for a virtuoso, the solo part contains considerable chalenges whose solution demands highest artistry and control.
Paul Baumgartner, born near Zürich, studied piano and composition with Walter Braunfels in Münich, Germany, and with Eduard Erdmann in Köln. He played frequently with Pablo Casals, his pupils are Alfred Brendel, Karl Engel, Arie Vardi and the conductor Günter Wand
