Description

THE PEOPLES PEOPLE present The Spirit of David LP

Up for auction is the LP, "The Peoples People present The Spirit of David" by the group, The Peoples People -- privately pressed through their own "Voice of the People Record Co." label.

It's a spiritual jazz LP recorded on the U.S. West Coast, but it's famous for the song "Fritz" which is nearly 18 minutes long and is just about the nicest piece of West Coast Jazz Funk you'll ever hear. This is album-only funk!

According to the only other reference source I have, 500 copies were pressed. The low pressing number would seem accurate because the cover is actually hand printed using a silkscreen process (including the back cover and liner notes). It's likely that with the ravages of time, and the fragility of the printed surface of the hand-printed sleeve, these are getting SCARCE!

Playing lineup:
Jeff Jones - tenor sax
Ray Vega - Percussion, congas
Steve Espanosa - keyboard/piano
Emmons Porter - Bass
Jack Spinovich - Drums
Leonard Franklin - Guitar

Recorded at MANTRA STUDIOS in San Mateo, California, January 31, 1976 (so really still 1975!)

CATALOGUE IDENTIFIER: JJF 171023-B

The back cover of the album carries the following messages "Take this medication for anxiety, fatigue, dispair loneliness, dosage: 1-2 times daily. Dr Jones" and "Produced & Directed entirely by The Creator"

The album has never been properly reissued for a number of reasons: difficulty contacting the original copyright holders and the fact that very few people have a copy of even the original LP let alone access to the studio reels.

International bidding is welcome. I can be contacted by email or telephone if anyone wants to know anymore information about the record.

I WILL BE POSTING A SOUND FILE FOR THE TRACK "FRITZ" TOMORROW. CHECK BACK TO HEAR IT! (file will be "Realaudio" format)

*After clicking the sound file link, please wait patiently for it to load. They are Realaudio files that play in the free program "RealPlayer". On a dial-up connection they will take about 10-15 seconds to download.*

CONDITION GRADINGS
Vinyl Surface Grade: Very Good +++ (vinyl is still nice and glossy, but there are some light marks which stop it from securing an Excellent to Near Mint grading). One side also has a blue line across the label. This does not affect readability of the information on the label, and is not an indication of the general condition of the labels on either side. (Both are otherwise Excellent).
Vinyl Sleeve Grade: There are some very small sections of 5mm wide tape along the edges of the sleeve where the previous owner has tried to protect against seam splits. These are barely noticeable and didn't stop me from paying serious money for this when I bought it. Back cover is in Excellent condition. Front cover has some marks where the very fragile hand printed surface has been worn slightly. The cover is otherwise very strong and has been protected behind a poly sleeve as long as I've had it (except for being taken out to be photographed for the auction photos). There is also some edgewear.

Please see below for a photo of the item. This is an ACTUAL scan of the auction piece - NOT just a photo I downloaded off the net.

I think you'll agree it sounds more like '73 than '76. Listen to how tuff the drums sound whenever he plays a fill! Tight, rolling horns and nice warm keys....with a fair rumbling bassline holding the whole thing together.

The tune warms up in straight jazz mode before morphing into a very sweet, rolling funk tune. Goes crazy again towards the end in a mixed up progressive jazz style!
