Label Conditions: Both practically as made: very clean, fresh and attractive and I can see NO spindle marks at all. A record barely run-in in vinyl terms with sound quality to match.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: A brilliant third album by the early Pink Floyd, the first not to feature Syd Barret. Of the 13 songs, only six are instrumental and this hardly has the feeling of being a soundtrack. Mixed material with some beautiful softer songs and also a couple of really heavy ones too. This a real personal favourite and this copy is without the very best pressing I have yet heard. Not a first issue, but when they sound like this, I really care little. A record probably played just once prior to my mandatory sound check, and even those difficult songs like the sublime ‘Cymbaline’ and the ultra delicate opener ‘Cirrus Minor’ play to perfection. Absolute silence on the run-in grooves and those gorgeous birdsongs devoid of the usual surface noise and crackle. A pure delight and a record of genuine audiophile quality.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. The wraps around the closed folds and ends on the back via the spine. This has the grey finish with the couple facing east. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the EMI white inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Apart from a couple of very fine and light surface creases, this front is practically as made. The laminate very shiny, fresh and clear with full adhesion. A merest hint of rim impression near the top edge, but look hard. Even under light, barely any surface trace marks and this is very attractive indeed.

Cover Back: Very slight traces of toning near the bottom edge but this shows little. Very light rim impression with a faint rub near the top edge. This cover is very prone to ring wear and in terms of this, this is very faint indeed. Very faint surface marks are seen under angled light, but again minimal. A delicate back that still looks very impressive.

Top Edge: Little short of as made.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with practically no wear, any thickening or burring barely even registers. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Again, practically as made: solid, straight with no compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate.

Corners: All four show barely any hint of wear at all. Better than excellent to near mint shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this somewhat wear-prone cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): a white EMI text, unlined inner sleeve that has barely aged at all. Clean, fresh, no creasing or edge splits.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): and even this does this practically pristine scant justice. I rarely will contemplate using the word Mint, but this has tempted me. A supreme visual copy that is ultra clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy maybe played once prior to my sound check with any surface minuscule, even with scrutiny under my very bright lamp bulb. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: When records are this clean, well pressed and barely played, I have no qualms in offering a little later copy. This beautiful record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for what has always been a difficult record. Take the introduction for example: this fades into quiet birdsong and takes no prisoners for crackle and surface noise. This plays as silent as you could ever imagine and was a genuine pleasure to listen too. The rest of the album plays up to that standard as well. Few copies will match or outperform this still quite early pressing I feel sure. Master tape quality is assured for the most discerning audiophile collector. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record which is one of my personal favourites within the Floyd catalogue. Still possibly under-appreciated compared to their giant mega-selling titles, but this is the real sound of the early band who were more experimental and dare I say – interesting. This record will prove near impossible to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation. If sound quality is more important than issue date, this record is unbeatable.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
