TITLES ARE -
ONE/CAR - (this plastic wrap seal has a small tear if the perferation other then that perfect) The first of three solo albums by the ex-Genesis singer, all to be officially released as only "Peter Gabriel". In time, the three would take on "also-known-as" nicknames based on the front-cover artwork of each. This volume is usually referred to as Peter Gabriel (I, Car). In 1977 there was much anticipation for the first solo effort from the flamboyant Gabriel. Three years had passed since his swan song with Genesis. He had certainly exited on a high note indeed with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. While fans shouldn't have worried about the survival of Genesis without their original lead singer, neither would they be disappointed in his solo debut. Produced by Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper), he addressed the split with his band mates in the allegoric hit "Solsbury Hill", while retaining the art-rock sensibilities he had pioneered. The balance of the album, transferred from the artist's personal original master tapes, includes other concert favorites, such as "Moribund The Burgermeister", "Modern Love", "Excuse Me", "Humdrum", "Slowburn", "Waiting For the Big One", "Down The Dolce Vita" (featuring the London Symphony Orchestra) and "Here Comes The Flood". .
1. Moribund The Burgermeister 2. Solsbury Hill 3. Modern Love 4. Excuse Me 5. Humdrum 6. Slowburn 7. Waiting For The Big One 8. Down The Dolce Vita 9. Here Comes The FloodTWO - The pairing is ideal -- the former front man of Genisis, as produced by the leading light of King Crimson. On this, Peter Gabriel's second album, the songs "On the Air" and "D.I.Y." are stunning slices of modern rock circa 1978, bubbling with streamlined production that nevertheless sounds as large as a stadium. Other tunes include "A Wonderful Day in a One-Way World," "White Shadow," "Animal Magic," the tense-yet-catchy "Perspective" and the reflective closer "Home Sweet Home."
1.
On The Air 2. D.I.Y. 3. Mother Of Violence 4. A Wonderful Day In A One-Way World 5. White Shadow 6. Indigo 7. Animal Magic 8. Exposure 9. Flotsam And Jetsam 10. Perspective 11. Home Sweet HomeTHREE - Generally regarded as Peter Gabriel's finest record, his third album finds him crafting material that's artier, stronger, more song oriented than before. Consider its ominous opener, the controlled menace of "Intruder." He's never found such a scary sound, yet it's a sexy scare, one that is undeniably alluring, and he keeps this going throughout the record. Even radio favorites like "I Don't Remember" and "Games Without Frontiers" are hardly cheerful, spiked with paranoia and suspicion. He wound up having albums that sold more, or generated bigger hits, but this third Peter Gabriel album remains a masterpiece. Transferred, for the first time ever, from the original 30-ips 1/4" master on Bernie Grundman's all-tube cutting system, this Classic 200-gram pressing, packaged in a deluxe gatefold die-cut jacket with printed inner sleeves, is the definitive LP version of this giant album.
1. Intruder 2. No Self-Control 3. Start 4. I Don't Remember 5. Family Snapshot 6. And Through the Wire 7. Games Without Frontiers 8. Not One of Us 9. Lead a Normal Life 10. BikoFOUR - Gabriel’s fourth album, which was titled Security in the U.S., continues where the third album left off, sharing some of the same dense production and sense of cohesion, yet lightening the atmosphere and expanding the sonic palette somewhat. The gloom that permeates the third album has been alleviated. and while this is still decidedly somber and serious music, it has a brighter feel, partially derived from Gabriel’s dabbling in African and Latin rhythms. These are generally used as tonal coloring, enhancing the synthesizers that form the basic musical bed of the record. 4 flows easily and enticingly with songs like the eerie “San Jacinto,” “I Have the Touch” and “Shock the Monkey.” It remains a powerful listen, one of the better records in Gabriel’s catalog.
1. The Rhythm Of The Heat 2. San Jacinto 3. I Have The Touch 4. Family And The Fishing Net 5. Shock The Monkey 6. Lay Your Hands On Me 7. Wallflower 8. Kiss Of LifeSO - Peter Gabriel introduced his fifth studio album So with “Sledgehammer,” an Otis Redding-inspired soul-pop raver that was easily his catchiest, happiest single to date. Needless to say, it was also his most accessible, and, in that sense it was a good introduction to So, the catchiest, happiest record he ever cut. “Sledgehammer” propelled the record toward blockbuster status, and Gabriel had enough songs with single potential to keep it there. There was “Big Time,” another colorful dance number; “Don’t Give Up,” a moving duet with Kate Bush; “Red Rain,” a stately anthem popular on album rock radio; and “In Your Eyes,” Gabriel’s greatest love song which achieved genuine classic status after being featured in Cameron Crowe’s classic, Say Anything. This release features the additional tune “We Do What We’re Told (Milgrames 37)” that was originally not on the Geffen vinyl issue in 1986.
Side One 1. Red Rain 2. Sledgehammer 3. Don't Give Up 4. That Voice AgainSide Two 1. Mercy Street 2. Big Time 3. We Do What We're Told (Milgram's 37) 4. This is the Picture (Excellent Birds) 5. In Your Eyes
PASSION - DOUBLE LP SET - Passion is in actuality Peter Gabriel’s soundtrack to the Martin Scorsese film The Last Temptation of Christ, re-titled as a result of legal barriers; regardless of its name, however, there’s no mistaking the records stirring power. Like much of Gabriel’s solo work, the album is a product of his continuing fascination with world music, which he employs here to create an exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric tapestry of sound perfectly evocative of the film’s resonant spiritual drama. Passion achieves a cumulative effect clearly Middle Eastern in origin, yet its brilliant fusion of ancient and modern music ultimately transcends both geography and time. Remarkably dramatic, even visual, it is not only Gabriel’s best film work but also deserving of serious consideration as his finest music of any kind.
1. The Feeling Begins 2. Gethsemane 3. Of These, Hope 4. Lazarus Raised 5. Of These, Hope - Reprise 6. In Doubt 7. A Different Drum 8. Zaar 9. Troubled 10. Open 11. Before Night Falls 12. With This Love 13. Sandstorm 14. Stigmata 15. Passion 16. With This Love - choir 17. Wall of Breath 18. The Promise of Shadows 19. Disturbed 20. It is Accomplished 21. Bread and WineBIRDY - Peter Gabriel's first foray into soundtracks was for Alan Parker's contemplative film
Birdy and is a successful companion piece, providing a backdrop that is moody and
evocative. Nearly half of the album's dozen tracks incorporate threads from material
found on Gabriel's 1982 Security set, including "Close Up," which makes use of
keyboard passages from "Family Snapshot," and "The Heat," which is a reworking of
"The Rhythm of the Heat" and builds to a frenzied percussive crescendo.
Material especially written for this project includes the murky opening track, "At Night,"
the tribal "Floating Dogs," and "Slow Marimbas," a track which would become part of
future live performances. The fact that Birdy is comprised of all instrumentals and its
meditative nature makes it fine, reflective listening for the more adventurous.
1. At Night 2. Floating Dogs 3. Quiet and Alone 4. Close up 5. Slow Water 6. Dressing the Wound 7. Birdy's Flight 8. Slow Marimbas 9. The Heat 10. Sketchpad With Trumpet and Voice 11. Under Lock and Key 12. Powerhouse at the Foot of the Mountain
