Label/Format: Apple – original very dark formats with matt surfaces that have a gentle trace of texturing, sie two almost ‘rustic’ looking.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks,hardly any on side one with no wear around the hole area. Another gem from a quality collection.

Brief Info: The second post-Beatles album and the only one credited to both Paul and Linda. Like his first solo album, this received no better reviews at the time, but time has reappraised both more favourably. Made without a regular band, this was not an overly commercial title and included no hit singles. Early issues are less easily found – they included a fully laminated cover whereas later ones were only protected on the front and back. This is a lovely example, appearing little played and offering impressive very clean sound quality with no inherent pressing noises, that is not always the case. This could prove a considerable upgrade for many and fans needing this more elusive vintage album, finding on much better will prove very difficult.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a quite robust FULLY laminated gatefold format with a wide spine. Printed and made in England, uncredited and includes the Apple text white inner sleeve.

Lamination: All areas of this cover are impressive and retain very fine shine and clarity with no lifting, few creases or dulling. Any marks or blemishes very few, fine and faint and little detracts from these clean hardly aged surfaces. The inside hinge laminate remains uncracked or peeled, that very unusual on these types.

Top Edges: Both laminated folds unworn and near flush and mostly straight. Any thickening to the card panel end light.

Bottom Edges: These have little to fault, a tiny tip rub to the bottom right back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All are clean, sharp with any thickening very little and light as seen viewed critically end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid and thick, straight with any compression light. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, also this has hardly sunken into any natural recess that always forms on opening due to the centre’s raised hinge. The laminate totally unpeeled or even cracked, a trait from which this, and similar covers often suffer.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creases are very small and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: An impressive all-round example of this rarer fully laminated early 1970’s original cover, one that will prove difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: an Apple text unlined inner, only lightly aged with the usual paper darkening. No hard creases, any crinkle light with no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. A little natural, patchy dulling within manufacture, but with NO affect on the superb sound. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, barely anything heard at all and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, to date this has to be cleanest pressed I have heard, it was a genuine delight to play-grade. It will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
