Offered here is an extremely rare item, a 1905 promotional picture disc, single sided, made by the French Pathe company.
It is catalogue number 37522 - Gioconda - (Baitado-horas) Banda, matrix 6651c, 10 inch single-sided.
These discs were made of some kind of clay or terra-cotta substance, with the beautiful Pathe picture (printed on thick paper) glued onto it. They then had a thin layer of shellac containing the grooves applied to the back, with a gold foil label. They were intended both as promotional items, but also as playable discs, although the steel needles and heavy sound-boxes of the time would have made mince-meat of the grooves in no time. This disc looks as if it was probably seldom if ever played, but the thin shellac layer has suffered from aging effects: like the only two other examples I've ever seen, the shellac layer is very crazed and would not now be playable at all - it was in this condition when I bought it about 20 years ago. At that time, a record dealer had obtained three of these; he had by then been collecting and dealing 78s for about 30 years (since the 1950s) and had never seen any before. In preparing this listing, I rang and asked him if he has seen any since then, and he said not. This gives some idea how rare these are!
This item is best suited to display: I had it mounted on the wall for many years. The picture side, as you can see, is in good condition, though with a couple of small tears and a needle-run - clearly someone thought they could play it!
