Ladies and Gentlemen: we have a honor of presenting here the rarest Otis Redding album in existence. This is so rare that even Otis' first two albums in mono are easier to find. From the information we have been able to gather, no one has ever seen - or heard of - a MONO stock copy of Otis Redding's legendary "Dock of the Bay" album. What we have here technically DOES NOT EXIST and is not supposed to exist. To our best knowledge, the existence of this (possibly PROMO-ONLY?) mono version of this great album has never been substantiated, and none of the price books and guides currently in print make any reference to its history or background. According to both Tim Neely and Neil Umphread price guides (multiple editions), there is no such thing… The historical importance of this item cannot be overestimated: this is an equivalent of discovering a long-lost animal or plant species!!!. Until now "Dock of the Bay" was believed to be the only Otis Redding album never to be released in mono (even the posthumously released albums such as Tell The Truth and Love Man have MONO white label promo versions). Well, we are pleased to report that the discovery of this album now completes Otis Redding's US Mono discography.
We are unable to determine whether this mono pressing was intended for distribution as a promotional item-only. It is certainly possible, because the album carries a promotional stamp (please see the picture); However, the label is NOT a white promo label, and the cover is DEFINITELY a mono cover, and NOT a "recycled" stereo cover. We find it exceedingly hard to believe that Volt label would print a limited run of mono covers for promotional purposes only. More likely explanation is that this was one of the last - and probably the very last - title the label ever issued in mono, and that it was pressed in mono in minute quantities; less than 300-500 copies, we would be willing to bet. Even a test pressing of this album we have in our collection plays stereo!!!!
This is the final album Otis Redding actively participated in preparation of, and his single biggest seller ever; a genuine historic artifact and one of the most cherished and beloved of all soul albums. The album comprises of the legendary title track, whose gentle, laid-back melancholy became a soundtrack to the entire soul generation, plus 10 other tracks culled from other Otis Redding albums and 45's… In terms of consistency, the album leaves something to be desired, but the sheer vocal power and emotional intensity of the performance easily compensate for all blemishes and rough spots. The title track was literally the last thing Otis Recorded in his life, and was left unfinished, for Steve Cropper and Volt/Stax engineers to reassemble and reincorporate, which they did masterfully. Track listing: (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay, - I Love You More Than Words Can Say - Let Me Come On Home - Open The Door - Don't Mess With Cupid - Glory Of Love - I'm Coming Home To See About You - Tramp - Hucklebuck - Nobody Knows You (When You're Down And Out) - Ole Man Trouble

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS WEAK NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 200:1.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
(e) Stock (commercially released) mono copies of this album are NOT known to exist.
· COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++.
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 5 (back side)
- Word ‘giveaway’ (probably signifying complementary promo copy) written in black marker in one corner of the back side (about ½ x 2 inch in size)
- Cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)
- Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
- Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
