Hands down, this epochal concert at New York's Madison Square Garden -- first issued on three LPs in a handsome orange-colored box -- was the crowning event of George Harrison's public life, a gesture of great goodwill that captured the moment in history and, not incidentally, produced some rousing music as a permanent legacy. Having been moved by his friend Ravi Shankar's appeal to help the homeless Bengali refugees of the 1971 India-Pakistan war, Harrison leaped into action, organizing on short notice what became a bellwether for the spectacular rock & roll benefits of the 1980s and beyond. The large, almost unwieldy band was loaded with rock luminaries -- including Beatles alumnus Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Badfinger, and two who became stars as a result of their electric performances here, Leon Russell ("Jumpin' Jack Flash"/"Youngblood") and Billy Preston ("That's the Way God Planned It"). Yet Harrison is in confident command, running through highlights from his recent triumphant All Things Must Pass album in fine voice, secure enough to revisit his Beatles legacy from Abbey Road and the White Album. Though overlooked at the time by impatient rock fans eager to hear the hits, Shankar's opening raga, "Bangla Dhun," is a masterwork on its own terms; the sitar virtuoso is in dazzling form even by his standards and, in retrospect, Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, and Alla Rakha amount to an Indian supergroup themselves. The high point of the concert is the surprise appearance of Bob Dylan -- at this reclusive time in his life, every Dylan sighting made headlines -- and he read the tea leaves perfectly by performing five of his most powerful, meaningful songs from the '60s. Controversy swirled when the record was released; then-manager Alan Klein imposed a no-discount policy on this expensive set and there were questions as to whether all of the intended receipts reached the refugees. Also, in a deal to allow Dylan's participation, the set was released by Capitol on LP while Dylan's label Columbia handled the tape versions. Yet, in hindsight, the avarice pales beside the concert's magnanimous intentions, at a time when rock musicians truly thought they could help save the world.

Condition 

I grade records conservatively and try to be as comprehensive as possible.  Records can look fine, yet sound like crap. For this reason, I listen to every record/song I sell. Any dust you see in my pics is gone when you receive it. I thoroughly clean each LP after I shoot the pics and before I listen to them. I also grade covers and records separately. If you collect for aesthetics, this is important. I care more about the vinyl than the packaging but want you to have no surprises, so I try to explain both with as much detail as possible.

These are used records. That doesn't mean you must tolerate bad vinyl. I can tolerate surface noise only if it's low-level, and doesn't spoil the listening experience. If it's wall to wall, that record is junk and I refuse to pass it along. I want you to be happy with your purchase.

Be advised, though, with me it's more about the music.  I can tolerate a crappy cover on a decent LP so long as it's doing its job; protecting the LP as designed--especially if it has some historic or artistic significance (design, etc.).  In such cases, I am willing to hold on to a damaged cover even though it has outlived its monetary value. I also use center-hole, plain white covers when an original cover is beyond saving. Buyers of anything in the middle get both.

I rate this vinyl as Excellent (EX)

Always handled carefully. Few visible flaws. Superb pressings. No skips. Very little surface noise.  No groove wear. The labels are clean, vivid and bright, lead-in grooves are clean. The vinyl has a high gloss. Always stored in audiophile inner sleeve.

I rate the box and collateral materials as Excellent (EX):

Sturdy and clean. Made of heavy box stock. No marks or stains, no fading. No rounded or split box corners. Great color and crisp, unmarked appearance. Good art.  Book and sleeves look good, clean and colorful.  Always poly sleeved.

Ships with original sleeves, new Mobile Fidelity Master inner sleeves and a new poly outer. Will be packed carefully to ensure safe arrival.

I love music and records. This is my private collection, one I accumulated over the last 40 years. I bought many of them new and have kept them that way. Some were gifts, some are promo copies I got while working in radio or bought used. All have been cleaned and stored properly. Unless otherwise stated, albums that came with printed sleeves or other promotional items still have them.
