Description
We have been very fortunate to have discovered two Northern Soul treasures by Robert Tanner recently. We sold a copy of his classic Sweet Memories this week and now we are offering "Tell Me Your Name" b/w "How I Feel" on Megatone Records.
Since selling "Sweet Memories" this week I have had a chance to talk to both Robert Tanner and Dawson Smith (the writer and producer of both songs). Both are real gentlemen who are aware of the popularity of their music in the Northern Soul scene. Dawson Smith also had a recording career on Scepter Records. Dawson told me the songs were recorded here in Lynchburg at a studio which closed in the early seventies and the songs were pressed in Tennessee.
Megatone had about 8 different artist record for it in the late 60's, but none caught on like Robert Tanner who had as his back-up group "The Jivers".
As I did with "Sweet Memories" I want to be careful in describing this record. I am not simply going with the grading scale below because these records are to valuable to offer vague descriptions.
1.) Both sides play through without skipping.
2.) As with "Sweet Memories" this one was found in a large box of 45's unprotected without a paper sleeve. That means there are surface scuffs etc.
3.) There is some surface noise, but I found this to be quite listenable and while I might grade the vinyl visually at VG+ I would grade the actual audio stronger. The surface noise would be noticeable when it reaches the dead wax, but during the song doesn't diminish the sound a great deal.
I now this description is subjective so please ask any questions before bidding. I think you will very much like adding this to your collection until you find a stronger copy.
In talking to both gentlemen I'd say "scarce" is the word when it comes to finding either song. Robert Tanner told me he has no copies of either record and hasn't seen one other than a "warped" copy in years.
There is no reserve as I am not worried that this classic will bring a fair price.
Since the song was recorded here in the area where I live I will be in constant search for other copies so check back from time to time. Who knows "lightning may strike twice".

GRADING:
MINT * Perfect record, clean gloss, no marks. A mint record is uncommon.
MINT- * Very clean only a couple light marks; plays very well.
VG++ * Surface marks, no scratches, should play and look very good, with minimal surface noise
VG+ * More surface marks, maybe a few faint scratches; should play and look very good but more surface noise, some occasional clicks
VG * Still a nice record, looks used, light scratches, no gouges, still plays fairly well, some clicks
VG- * Record shows wear, marks, scratches, some surface noise

On Jan-23-06 at 14:04:44 PST, seller added the following information: I have had several e-mails from Northern Soul Collectors who were not aware this song even existed. Sweet Memories is well known in the Northern soul collector community, but this apparently is not. I have had several calls to listen to the song and would be happy to play it for you if you will e-mail me. On Jan-24-06 at 11:15:20 PST, seller added the following information:I was able to contact Dawson Smith again and get a little more information on Robert Tanner's records. There were only 500 copies of "Tell Me Your Name" printed and the same was true of "Sweet Memories". Dawson said the initial pressing of both of these songs was the only pressing. Dawson told me "Tell Me Your Name" was written by his brother and he thought it came after "Sweet Memories". A friend of mine who was a disc jockey in Lynchburg at the time and who introduced me to Robert Tanner and Dawson Smith said "Tell Me Your Name" was released first.

Several people have called and were blown away by both sides. Side A is basically the same tempo as Sweet Memories and Side B is more of a soulful ballad called "How I Feel".
