Description
Newcastle Big Band Sting The Police RARE! LP Record.
Described by the Newcastle Journal newspaper as “One part jazz, one part rock, one part melody and one part beer”
This is an increasingly rare LP featuring a young Gordon Sumner aka Sting on bass guitar. If you look closely you can see him on the front cover in the back row second in from the left! He plays on all 8 tracks.
It states on the rear of the cover “Distributed by Impulse Organisation 41 High Street West, Wallsend, NE28 7 RJ”.
Personnel playing are:
Electric Piano - Andy Hudson
Electric Bass - Gordon Sumner (Sting!)
Guitar - Kevin Healey
Drums - Don Eddy and Jackie Denton
The vinyl is a strong VG+ and the cover is solid but shows some signs of staining so is VG.
The matrix are IS- NBB 106A and IS- NBB 106B.
I have test played the record on my Clearaudio turntable and the audio is very good indeed! Certainly no skips or jumps and minimal signs of any crackle.
Here is a quote I have taken from Discogs!
“Two distinctly different "varieties" of this record exist. The sleeve is the same on both, but the circular label on the 2 varieties differs. The first is white with a rubber-stamped marking on it that identifies it as Newcastle Big Band. The other variety, presumably printed later on, has typed writing and the record label markings on it, instead of just being white with the rubber-stamping.
Also, the record label was not "Impulse Organisation." It was on the WUDWINK label which was a bit of a joke title created between Sting and David Wood, the owner of Impulse Sound Studios, where it was recorded.”
Some reports suggest although 2000 were pressed they only sold in the 100s - mainly at gigs. This copy is the even rarer version with the white label with the rubber stamping (somewhere between 50- 200 produced). The printed label was the later version.
