Brief Info: Brilliant debut album and the first of four issued on the Spiral label (the fourth, ‘Belladonna’, issued by Ian Carr, but Nucleus in all but name). All are scarce and highly elusive in top conditions. The covers yet again are collector’s nightmares and seldom seen without heavy wear and damage. Although this one has some wear, it is still one of the better ones I have seen. Hardly being obvious, this is another Roger Dean cover, which are always collectable in their own right. Musically Nucleus play jazz-rock-fusion, this being very similar to the sound that was about to emerge by Miles Davis from his electric period and the massive ‘Bitches Brew’. But this album was issued prior to that seminal work. Here we have six top musicians in this field including Carr and the guitar talents of Chris Spedding. Blistering blowing solos and this album generates real excitement. A true Swirl classic and all the early Nucleus albums are recommended. Although the cover may be a little down, the record itself is fantastic and offers brilliant sound throughout. Not had one of these for ages and this was a genuine thrill to play-grade. For Vertigo fans, collectors and top-quality jazz-rock, this one is unmissable and like the other titles in this most collectable series, they are becoming ever-creasingly difficult to find.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. The front is single thickness card with a ‘balloon’ shape die-cut window. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and includes the Swirl inner sleeve. The cover was designed and illustrated by Roger Dean – one of his least obvious ones for sure.

Cover Front: The most difficult area on the main faces is the die-cut window, due to it’s shape, this in most cases catches when stored in racks, cases or even inserting into protective sleeves. Thus this area is most often seen creased – as here – or far worse, actually torn and badly damaged, which this has totally avoided. So the shaped parts where the large circle merges with the lower small circle is creased, but still intact with NO repairs. Still quite neat with both the rounded circle parts crisp and unthickened. Single, nearly all black card, well hardly surprising these are most often seen very tatty, creased and rubbed. This has some creasing, but not too much and nothing heavy, mostly seen near the top right corner and edges. A little rubbing, this mostly near the bottom edge and only very light, and still lighter near the spine edge. Overall still clean and reasonably fresh and fine looking.

Cover Back: The back also has some fairly gentle edge rubbing and similar creasing, but showing little. In fact this has hardly any trace of ringwear which is a major plus, as is the superb graphic of the band which is pretty much unworn at all. This one has a white edge area to the top, that purely within construction of this particular example.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both sides are impressive clean and fresh with little to really fault. Of course the die-cut area has the same crease area as the front, but here lighter and showing less. Again, this part is neat and overall crisp with no tearing. Minor handling traces to the left blacker side.

Top Edges: The front single thickness card is neat and crisp, hardly any thickening at all, this being naturally protected by the thicker and slightly higher back. The back being white has minor rubbing but the lack of colour means it hardly registers.

Bottom Edges: The back fold has light to moderate patchy rubbing, the front again is impressive with little wear or thickening.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All edges are clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Yet another perilous area, and there is some rubbing to the bottom corner area, also a little above with around 40 per cent of the catalogue number text eroded. However, the text further up is still largely present, intact and easy to read – that is fine news as I can imagine some of these will be threadbare. Still solid, straight with minimal compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel.

Corners: The corners have some rubbing and creasing, but overall, most are still neat, with generally fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very difficult and challenging cover that will seldom surface anything like top-drawer. So no hesitation in offering this one, a little down I suppose, but in context, still a very fine example overall. Not for purists or the most discerning, but given the rarity and vulnerability, it will please many collectors. On such fragile and delicate types, sometimes some compromise has to be made.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: date-coded 1/0470, and with two very crisp and undamaged window circles and clear polylining. Some corner area creasing but all edges unsplit with no repairs. Gentle ageing from mild seam area darkening.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or close to. A very fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with only modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Whispy types only, totally superficial with no penetrating stylus marks at all, thus sound is impressively clean throughout. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant first Nucleus album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and generally appears carefully handled. Viewed in normal room light, barely anything of note shows on these impressive playing surfaces and nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This elusive Swirl could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
