Label/Format: RCA Victor – Original first issue black format. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, very few and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. One tiny non-spindle mark on side one, but look hard.

Cat Number: RD 7928.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 149 grams. A very good weight for any record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: I regard this as a pretty rare album as a UK mono original, especially one so lightly played and sound so good. This sold in very low numbers, most seen are significantly later pressings when his name became more familiar, by then, the mono format had long gone.

Brief Info: The second album, but first issued in the UK by this less than conventional singer-songwriter. A little known name at the time and this splendid album sold poorly. Most sales achieved later after he found more commercial success. This includes several self-written songs and some covers, including a couple by The Beatles and gives an early indication of his unusual vocal abilitities. Seldom seen in mono and rarely in such superb condition, this beauty looks and plays beautifully and devoid of the usual mono issues that blight so many. For fans of this legendary singer-songwriter, this superb mono first issue will prove immensely difficult to match or find better.

Cover Grade and Format: More than worthy of an EX+ (at least) grading. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This wraps around the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. This is genuine Mono cover with the word used along with the correct Cat. No.

Lamination & Front: A very attractive and colourful front. The laminate is very fresh, clear and shiny and has no dulling or friction rubs. All solidly adhered with no lifting or blisters that’s so often a trait of Clarifoil especially and few avoid some laminate issues. A small few ultra faint and fine surface creases barely even register and only just come into view under tilted viewing under light. This scarce original mono front will prove hard to find better than this.

Cover Back: The critically revealing matt black back also looks strong with only mild traces or handling and minor rub traces. A very fine rim arc is jsut seen on the left edge but the avoidance of deep, full penetrating ringwear is a bonus on such a cover, especially so with a thick, heavy record inside for over 40+ years. Any creases, like the front, are few and very light and faint, this back also sets a very high standard.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both are practically unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. A little light burring just evidence viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine too: solid, straight with any compression light. All text is near perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. The ends are tapered in manufacture.

Corners: All four in superb shape with barely any traces of wear.

Cover Summary: A very impressive all-round example of this original mono 1968 cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: The heavy duty, Decca-style polylined inner has little wear at all and is barely even aged. Mainly mild glue darkening on the edges, but far less than most of this age. The window is immaculate and the lining ultra clear, all edges unsplit and any creasing very light indeed and barely any even present. This date coded 5-69.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++, this looks hardly even played and has two beautiful clean playing surfaces with any surface blemishes or hairlines few and ultra faint. If I could find all mono originals like this, I for one, would be more than happy. Alas, that is rarely the case however, with high percentages of mono records heavily played with often worn-out piledriver stylus that inflicted their damage all to freely. The result: a disastrous listening experience with noise, clicks and worst of the lot, distortion. This record has avoided such trauma and is a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super original, Decca-pressed record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. I recently sold a stereo early 70s repress of this wonderful album and this mono copy presents the music very differently. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. No blunt sapphire stubs have ever been near this one and this plays with no mono nasties, even on my clinically revealing LP12 for which this record was never really designed for. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
