Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only very light and moderate spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Side one very few at all, side two more and spread but still only fine and only really showing under light.

Cat Number: UNLS 117.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 146 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: I rarely offer Neil Diamond albums, but this (and the superb ‘Stones’) I am currently offering were real eye-openers. This is not an overly commercial album with a very African influence, especially side two which is truly sublime. If you think Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’ was the first to use the sound of Africa within popular music, think again – this man did it first and most of the compositions on this album are self-written. This is an album is haunting beauty and I immediately fell in love with it on my very first listen. The recording company did not deem it commercial enough to be successful, but successful it was. It includes the brilliant ‘Cracklin Rosie’ single which always sounds better on the original album rather than compilations. Diamond’s early albums clearly are very special and I will be investigating others after hearing these two. Great voice, arrangements and material, this simply must be included in any serious collection and this beauty plays to perfection. Do not lose this one, no music lover could fail to be moved by this.

Cover Grade and Format: A very fine EX, a single format with no lamination. This has it’s original £2.09 price sticker on the back which I have decided to leave alone as removal on an unprotected back has a high chance of pulling the surface. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace.

Cover Front: Clearly this is a wear prone cover, especially with a heavy Decca-pressed record inside. But this front has survived the years with little wear and any blemishes minor and faint. Odd minor surface mark under light and light surface crease or two. No ringwear and minimal traces of rubbing and clean, really very nice actually.

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive and devoid of the usual grubbiness and ringwear seen on many like this. Odd minor crease or two, but this back will prove incredibly hard to find like this again. The small original price sticker has already been mentioned and helps date this old album that is fast approaching forty.

Top & Bottom Edges: Barely any wear to the top and only minor and faint rub traces on the bottom.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with minimal traces of wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Quite solid, straight with minimal compression, one small rub has just clipped the ‘N’ on ‘Neil’, the rest is unworn.

Corners: All neat and with little wear, all retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all round example of this early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive, if flimsey item should please many collectors.

The Inner: This includes the blue heavy-duty Decca-style polylined inner in superb EX++ condition. No edge splits, minimal traces of creasing, clean and attractive and a superb undamaged, clear window. Minimal traces of glue darkening on the seams, far less than most seen. This is date coded 10-71 proving the vintage of this copy.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: A super EX and only showing ultra fine whispy surface marks under angled light. A super visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed by Decca. A copy modestly played on all the evidence and a high-quality pressing as you would expect from probably the bests record company ever. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – please check out my other early Neil Diamond gem on Uni also on offer from the same collection. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Musically, this is a mini-classic and at the time highly original, the least commercial within his catalogue. If Simon’s ‘Graceland’ appeals, please give this one a try.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
