1952: Andy Warhol wins the award from the Art Directors Club for graphics done for a CBS radio program called The Nation's Nightmare about narcotics and crime. Although Warhol won his award in 1952, the radio program was actually broadcast during the summer of 1951. It consisted of a series of six broadcasts, two of which were released on a album featuring two drawings by Warhol on the front cover - one of a junkie shooting up and another of two men embroiled in a fight. The blurb on the cover promised "a report of crime in America in 1951 - documented with tape recordings from back rooms and front offices of the underworld."3 Lou Dorfsman was the creative director of CBS at the time. Dorfsman admired Warhol's commercial illustrations but wasn't as enthusiastic about some of his later pop paintings.

Lou Dorfsman:

"... Radio was the big business of CBS then, television was the step-child growing up... and you could see that one was going to take over, there was no question about that, so we wanted to keep [radio] alive and vital... Andy Warhol had the visual impact that I wanted for such a subject. There's a gritty quality about the style... [Ben] Shahn brought the same thing to it; that's where I cast Andy in that role... I'd say... what about a guy shooting up; here's the layout I'm doing and I don't want to restrict you... I just explained to him what the program was all about... and left it to him... “

ANDY WARHOL ALBUM COVERS

Warhol would continue to do album covers throughout his life - the most well-known being the 1967 Velvet Underground album featuring a banana and the 1971 cover for The Rolling Stones' album Sticky Fingers, co-designed with Craig Braun, which featured an image of a man's crotch in a pair of jeans with a functioning zipper. The Nations Nightmare was probably the first album cover featuring Warhol's work. Concidentally, it dealt with the use of recreational drugs - a theme that would often be associated with Warhol and his entourage throughout the 1960s as a result of films like The Chelsea Girls which showed Brigid Berlin shooting up speed on camera. Warhol would also became known for his use of transvestites in his films. In approximately 1952, the same year that he won the award for The Nation's Nightmare, Warhol also did some of his earliest drawings of a man in drag when he sketched the photographer, Otto Fenn, dressed as a woman. Warhol's drawings were similar to photographs that Fenn had taken of himself dressed as a woman.

Other than these, Andy Warhol also did fine cover artwork for albums by Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Kenny Burrell (3 covers), Johnny Griffin, Joe Newman, Bennie Green, Diana Ross, John Cale (2 covers), John Wallowitch, Rolling Stones (3 covers), Velvet Underground (2 covers), Moondog, Liza Minelli, John Lennon, Thelonious Monk, Paul Anka, Billy Squier, Tennesse Williams and many, many others.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          This is the original flat-edge pressing

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners (a corner has nearly separated from the rest of the cover, but is still holding)

-         Cover has a visible 1.1/4 dent/tear on the spine

-         Cover has a few wrinkles along the seams

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a small stamp on the back panel

-         Cover has some small writing on its back side (a small matrix number written in one corner)

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some writing on its front side  (name of the TV station: CBS written in black marker, about 1 x  1.1/2 inch in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams (although the seams are barely holding and may snap anytime)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
