THE BOOK OF TALIESYN - TREMENDOUSLY RARE LIMITED EDITION 180 GRAM PRESSING. LONG OUT OF PRINT -  Most rock n roll fans think of Deep Purple as a premiere hard rock n roll band with some intriguing organ passages which compliment the shrieking vocals of Ian Gillan as well as some elaborate Ritchie Blackmore. However, Deep Purple was not always so hard and heavy from the start. On their first three LPs, Deep Purple's music had a very pronounced psychedelic tone with even some classical touches. This second release, The Book of Taliesyn is certainly high on creativity because of these aforementioned touches.

Especially noteworthy are the covers of Neil Diamond's Kentucky Woman, the Beatles' We Can Work It Out, and River Deep Mountain High. The drumming on these songs as well as the harmony vocals inject a great deal of pulse into these songs The ballad Anthem is a nice diversion from some of the rockin' tunes on the record. Listen, Learn, Read On and Shield add some supernatural mystical tones that are truly captivating. The organ work by Jon Lord is extremely exemplary.

THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT  One of Purple's best but least-known and most underrated studio albums, 'House of Blue Light' breaks new ground - synthesizers are used more extensively than on any other Purple album, but not so much that the distinctive guitar-hammond-organ-dominated sound is lost. The strengths that made Purple so great are never more evident than on this album: witty, clever lyrics, quality musicianship, great solos from Blackmore and Lord. "Bad Attitude" has an in-your-face brashness that should appeal to the younger listeners and a mini-extended synthesizer outro that is so textured and beautiful, it's only disappointing in that it fades out too soon - it would be great if it went on for several more minutes.

"Call of the Wild" is an atypical Purple song in that it has a "poppish" sound; it sounds like something you would hear on commercial FM radio. "Mad Dog" is a straight-ahead rocker. "Strangeways" is totally unlike anything Purple has done before or since - lots of synthesizers, very experimental, way out in left field compared to the usual Purple stuff. I like it - it's refreshing; different.

"The Spanish Archer" has to be the "dark horse" song of the album: guitar-dominated, powerful; Blackmore is all over the place - intense, emotional, almost undisciplined. Listen closely in the background as the lyrics are being sung - Blackmore is pulling sounds out of the guitar you won't believe. "Dead or Alive" is a hard-driving rocker in the classic Purple style and features high-flying solos from Blackmore and Lord. Another great song on the album is "Mitzee Dupree", a blues-tinged, swinging, swaying rocker about a stripper who does strange things with ping-pong balls.

Blackmore's short but blistering solo fits in perfectly here. It is said Deep Purple spent a lot of time making this album, and it shows. The songs are well-crafted and tightly-woven together. Overall, this is a very impressive effort 'Blue Light' has a MUCH greater variety of songs and MUCH more experimentation than previous albums.

This package contains the original MACHINE HEAD plus quadrophonic mixes of 2 songs on one disc, MACHINE HEAD remixed by Roger Glover in 1998, and a 28 page booklet.
A probable contender for one of hard rock's "all-time most influential albums," Deep Purple's MACHINE HEAD has all the markings of a heavy classic. It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The lone presence of "Smoke on the Water" immediately elevates the album to essential status. The song became a long-running radio staple, and boasts one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs in rock history.
Yet the rest of the album holds up impressively, from the adrenaline-soaked opener "Highway Star," in which organist Jon Lord and guitarist Richie Blackmore trade off dazzling solos, to the churning "Space Truckin'," another riff-driven rocker. Vocalist Ian Gillian, whose dramatic, soaring tenor set the mold for many heavy metal singers to follow, is in fine form here, as are the pyrotechnics of Blackmore and Lord. Everything from the title to the warped group photo on the album cover indicates that MACHINE HEAD will be an exercise in unabashed, brain-melting rock, and that is exactly what it delivers. It still stands in the pantheon of seminal hard rock records.
