Narnia appears to be something like an offshoot band of After the Fire, led by their keyboardist Peter Banks at the time of the later's hiatus in 1973.Bassist Tim Haywell and guitarist John Russell were also members of After the Fire at some point, while female singer Pauline Filby was already an experienced singer, having released a personal album in 1969 on Herald.The quintet was complemented by drummer Kenneth Dixon.The band recorded an album for the Christian-related label Myrrh under the title ''Aslan is not a tame lion'', eventually this one came out in 1976.
Narnia sound like if JEFFERSON AIRPLANE jammed with CAROL OF HARVEST, having strong psychedelic influences and light folky touches marked with an overall Art Rock atmosphere.The name of the band and the title of the album are linked to C. S. Lewis' fantasy novel ''The chronicles of Narnia'', where Aslan was a lion and one of the main characters of the series.Regarding the style chosen, this is a very nice album with a fantastic vocalist and lots of interesting music parts, performed under a very tight songwriting.The guitars and the rhythm section are defiitely showered with Psychedelic Rock inspirations, while the tracks are rather compatible with the old-fashioned sound of Narnia.Peter Banks is the main reason the album holds some strong proggy elements.Lots of impressive Mellotron, smooth Hammond organ and sweet piano lines alternate between the tracks to offer a richer and less conservative style
